Exam season had ended after an intense two months of tests and Dax finally had the time to get back to playing the newest, shiniest, hottest MMORPG of 20XX 'Flames of the Night Immortal Jade Warriors'. This year's exam season had felt endless, littered with exams that had spread their way through May and most of June. He had, had to miss the first fortnight of the game's newest expansion release and was now rushing his way through the levelling in order to catch up with his friends.
They were waiting for him in a high-level area that he was currently unable to enter. So, he was grinding XP in the ocean killing sea monsters. Just how many robot crabs did a man need to kill to reach level 68?
The answer was a lot. A lot of crabs.
The internet cafe was filled with people. Various other test takers had flooded in here now that they were free from exam halls and libraries. They, too, were desperate to get back into the game world. Drawn back to the glow of the computer screens, in the RBG ambience of a dark room filled to the brim with other gamers. Screaming at teammates and the sound of mouse buttons and keyboards being spammed permeated the air.
"Friends don't let their friends play Federation of Myths." A concerned teen told their friend over voice call whilst they themselves were actively playing Federation of Myths. Dax snorted, glad that he had been able to pull himself out of that game's thrall, though now he was almost exclusively an MMORPG player and that really wasn't any more socially acceptable.
Dax had to scour the place for a free seat. He'd practically ran here the moment the exam ended and there were already so many people here. All the way at the other end of the room, he finally found an unused PC in a corner. By the time he logged on, there was barely any time left to level up in order to meet up with his raiding group, who were already annoyed and waiting for him.
It was going to be his glorious return. He'd taken off three months in a somewhat vain attempt to ensure that he didn't fail his exams for the sixth time. Not being able to hang out with his online friends or play games had been almost physically painful.
Flames of the Night Immortal Jade Warriors was intensely popular right now. Everyone was talking about it, and it felt like everyone was playing the game.
The game's search ranking was above the mainstays of the genre, such as; Land of Conflict Artistry, Concluding Illusions, Novel Universe, Misplaced Vessel and Hieroglyph Scenery. It was hard to even make a character right now.
People were complaining all over the internet about how hard it was to come up with a username that hadn't already been taken.

Logging on to a server was touch and go too.
He really had, had to give up gaming for that long. The tests were really important for his future. Dax had failed last year so badly that it was beyond embarrassing and he'd vowed to himself that this year he would finally pass.
His parents were supporting him, both emotionally and financially. They still believed in him and his ability to get into a good university even after he had crashed and failed so badly...
Once.
Twice.
