Sherlock looked down on the letter he had written, and read it out loud.

"My dearest friend, John Watson.
I always said that feelings were a human weakness, and it only stopped people from reaching their full potential. But I realize now I was wrong. I never understood love. But thanks to you, I understand now. You taught me how to love.
I love you John. For all that you are, for all the adventures we have been on, and for all the times you saved me.
You may be just an normal human being, but to me you at everything. No you, no me. You complete me.
Always yours, S. H."

"Stupid!" Sherlock yelled. He picked up his lighter and set fire to the whole thing. He lit a cigarette, to calm himself down. John was gone now, so there were no one to stop him from smoking. John had married Mary, and lived with her now.
Sherlock had written numerous letters, but never sent them. John was married, he didn't love him, Sherlock told himself.
He knew there were no use in sitting alone writing letters to a married man he could never have, but he just couldn't stop it.

John sat at his home writing a letter. It was for Sherlock. As he was halfway finished, he threw it in the trash. It was already full of letters he had written, but never sent.
He was married to Mary, he had to remind himself. Whatever it was he felt for Sherlock he had to forget.
John had only married Mary to forget about what he felt about Sherlock, but he would never let her know that. He loved her too of course. But not as much as Sherlock, because he could never love anyone as much as Sherlock.
But he knew that he could never have Sherlock, so he had married Mary. He felt bad about it, but he couldn't help it.
John wasn't a bad person, he wouldn't normally use another person this way. It was just so hard living with Sherlock and seeing him every day, but knowing he would never be his.
And then Mary came along, and it was just so easy to make her fall in love with him. And they had married, because if John moved on with his life, than maybe he would forget about Sherlock. But it didn't work, obviously.

They sat in their homes, writing letters they would never send. Both assured themselves that the other one didn't love them.
Their love story was never meant to be.
