(Is is an apology chapter to make up for taking so long to write part 2, so I hope you like it. It's kinda short)
"LUNCHTIME!!" You yell across the daycare, Sundrop next to you shaking the bells on his wrists to direct the kids to him. Many little kids rush over to the snack area excitedly, and Sun choses a random child to be the line leader. Everyone else follows toward another employee, Jordan, who rolled in the serving cart with the food. It was taco Tuesday today, supplied by L-Chips.
Jordan was another volunteer, who transferred from his position as a Fazer Blaster instructor to the daycare with you. He was the same age as you, and even though he was fond of kids, got frustrated with them way too easily.
Before you follow, you walk around the daycare and scan for any extra children. Luckily, it seems like everyone was happily eating, a rare occurrence. On your way back, you find Sundrop picking up a knocked down Jenga tower.
"Hey Sunny." You greet when you reach them.
"Oh hello Y/N-" they start to say back, but a clap of thunder cuts him off.
"Oh crying out loud- you'd think after last time there was a storm they'd close down again!" You exclaim frustrated, not to fondly remembering when the power went out a few weeks ago.
"Relax, Y/N, it's not nearly as bad as last time. And they added a back-up generator to the daycare so the lights won't go out again." Sundrop reassures.
"If you say so... have the maintenance crew fixed Moon yet? Or do Jordan and I still need to run nap time?" You ask hesitantly.
"Not yet. From what I was told his programming was faulty from the start because the team scanned in old motherboards to speed up the process, so they're coding him from scratch. They deleted most of his programming, just to prevent a worst case scenario." They explain as the two of you start walking to where the kids were eating.
"Wait, then what would happen if Moon came out now?"
"I think he'd just be a husk until the lights came back on. Powered off until I come back. Or maybe-" just then a little girl ran over crying, her curly pigtails soaked, a little blond boy followed her, and Jordan close behind.
"Mr. Sun! Mr. Sun! Brady poured his milk on me!!" The girl said, tears streaming down her face.
"I did not! I tripped and it spilled on her!" The blond angrily explained.
Jordan pinched his nose bridge. "Look, I didn't see what happened, but can you clean the dirty trays Y/N? I'll mop up the milk mess and Sunny can resolve the fight." You nod and walk over to the kids, seeing that most are done eating.
"Guys gals and nonbinary pals, once you put your tray in this bucket and wash your hands, you may go play! But only after you give me your tray!" You announce to the cluster of kids. Most of them run over and return their tray, a few just running off.
"A little eager, are they" you mumble to yourself as you pick up the neglected trays and roll the cart back to the employee's only room where the sink is. As it fills up with water, you squeeze some soap in and drop in the trays. Washing dishes is a mindless task so you let your mind wander.
You suddenly remember that Sun was about to tell you something before the kids ran over. You can't bring it up in a conversation again, it would be too late to ask now... You just shrug it off, slipping into a daydream as you scrub the trays and put them in the drying rack.
The door squeaks open behind you, and expecting it to be Jordan you say "Was the fight resolved? If so, I'm almost done with the dishes, then we can set up for nap- you're not Jordan." You trail off, turning around to see the same little girl from before.
"Excuse me Mx..." she stammers, and you notice she looks scared.
"Y/N, you can call me Y/N. What's your name?" You say gently, crouching down to her level.
"Suzi..." She tells you.
"Well nice to meet you Suzi. Now can you tell me what's going on?" You ask.
"Well, Mx. Y/N, Mr. Sun was talking to Brady and I about misunderstandings, and the the thunder got really loud and the lights are dark and Mr. Sun looks different and- and-" Suzi abruptly stops, tears welling up in her eyes.
"Woah, woah, it's okay. You did nothing wrong. How about we go out together and see what's up?" You stand up and offer a hand. She nods, accepting it, and the two of you walk out.
Fully expecting the lights to be off, you're relived to see that they're just dimmed. And looking over at Sun revealed that Moon wasn't a threat either, though you could only see him from the back. The colors of his outfit were different, but he might just be putting on a puppet show for the kids today.
"Look, there's Sun, let's go make sure he's okay." You say to Suzi. The both of you head over to him.
Suzi tugs on his baggy pants to get his attention, "Mr. Sun? I got Mx. Y/N to make sure you're all fine." She says. He turns around, but he isn't Sundrop...
Both the sun and moon sides of his face were lit up, his long baggy sleeved shirt traded for a short sleeved one that showed their suspenders. The shirt had stars on it and his normal baggy pants were orange and blue striped now. A top hat finished the ensemble instead of their sunrays or nightcap.
"My apologies, but I'm not Sun at the moment. You may call me Eclipse." He explains, holding out a hand for a handshake. You just stand there in shock, and Suzi hides behind you, gripping your hand tighter.
"Oh little one, I'm not going to hurt you-" he coos, trying to reach out to her, but Suzi covers her head with her free hand and holds yours even tighter, forcing you to suppress a wince. Man, kids are strong!
"Hey! Can't you see she's scared? Leave her be!" You yell at him. He looks offended, but backs away per your request.
You give Suzi's hand a squeeze and crouch down again. "Hey, he's not going to hurt you. Eclipse seems nice, and don't you want to meet a new friend?" You say to her. She loosens up a bit, and the two of you are looking at Eclipse again.
"Allow me to explain myself quickly. You see, when the sun and moon aline, you get an eclipse. That happens to Sun and Moon when the lights go dim. Not quite light, but not quite dark." They explain, "My existence is usually reserved for... mean parents, but it seems that the lights are having some technical difficulties."
"So Mr. Sun is okay?" Suzi asks.
"He's just dandy, and will back as good as new when the lights are bright again, sweet pea!" Eclipse tells her, boopping her noes and earning a giggle from her.
After making sure Suzi was completely okay, you turn around to head off, but see Jordan walking over.
"Y/N!" He says sternly, "You didn't finish the dishes- what the F-"
"-Fish! What the fish! Right Jordan?" You cut him off, giving him your best 'there are children here so cut the swearing' glare.
"Sorry, sorry. But what the fish is that?"
"He is Eclipse. Something about the lights being dim triggered him, I'm going to ask maintenance about this before I clock out." You tell him, "And I'll finish the dishes now, Suzi just came to get me to tell me about this."
"Well too late for that, I already finished them for you." He shrugs.
"Oh- thank you..." you say anticlimactically.
"We should start setting up for nap time Y/N." Jordan states.
"Yeah... yeah we should..." you reply, taking one last glance back at Eclipse. He also looks at you, and you lock eyes.
"Until we meet again!" He calls after you with a wave. You give a weak wave back, and turn to follow Jordan.
"Until we meet again..."
