It's ironic really, how one thing can change your life. A muzzle flash for example. The side of the gun determining how your life is going on either side it's pretty bad, but for the person on the business end of the gun, well things are pretty crappy. Most people don't really think about it. I certainly don't, not often. But the person they are tasked to protect, their child, a businessman, a co-worker, well, we all think about them often. I was so focused on the man in the chair, I forgot. I forgot to check the room for threats. I'm sorry. If I hadn't forgot you wouldn't be dead... and I wouldn't be dying.

Ten minutes earlier.

I ran from room to room calling our name. But you weren't responding. looking back this should've been the first clue. But I had to save you. So, I kept running. Kept looking. Every room, every door. Till I found one that was locked. It didn't take me long to pick the lock. I threw the door open violently, and I saw you, bound and gagged, shaking your head violently and trying to tell me something. I ran over and removed the gag, and you only said one word. Run. I had been so focused on you I hadn't cased the room properly, or I would have noticed the camera and the one-way glass. When you told me to run, I realized my mistake.

But it was too late.

A hole appeared in the glass, and pain flared in my hip, and my leg gave out. I drew my pistol and fired blindly at the glass, causing it to shatter, and then I heard the sound of a bullet hitting flesh and you grunt, followed by a shell hitting the floor. I was finally able to see him, but it was too late. His suppressed rifle was pointed at my head. I froze.

"My boss was right." He said in a gruff voice, "You came to save your boyfriend."

Then he fired, not killing me, but cutting the artery in my shoulder. Then he left. It's funny how we got here. You dead, me dying. All because I failed. Me. The Ice Queen. Not you, but me.

I was supposed to protect you. But I failed. I'm sorry Ben. I'm sorry...
