Sukhpreet Kaur
As the sun began to peek through the curtains, I slowly opened my eyes and realized with a jolt that I had overslept. Panic surged through my veins as I leaped out of bed and dashed towards the bathroom. The sound of water cascading from the showerhead filled the room as I hastily brushed my teeth, desperately trying to make up for lost time. The droplets of water splashed against my skin, awakening my senses and invigorating my tired body.
With my heart pounding in my chest, I swiftly dried myself off and threw on a pair of jeans and a cozy hoodie. The fabric clung to my skin, providing a comforting embrace against the chilly morning air. As I rushed downstairs, the aroma of freshly toasted bread wafted through the house, tempting my growling stomach. Without a moment to spare, I grabbed a slice of toast and stuffed it into my mouth, savoring the warm, buttery goodness.
With a quick goodbye to my family, I sprinted towards my car, the engine roaring to life as I turned the key in the ignition. The familiar hum of the tires against the pavement filled the air as I sped towards campus. Miraculously, the roads were clear, allowing me to make up for lost time.
When I reached the dorm, I slowly opened the door to see Tavni sitting on the counter, glaring at the door. Or maybe me.
"Where were you? You're a full two hours late." She exclaimed as she threw her hands up in the air. I rolled my eyes at her dramatism.
No wonder Jassu and her get along.
"I woke up late. Any problem?" I threw myself onto the couch.
"Relax Tavni! You also wave up late" Dimple saved my ass from a Tavni whooping.
"And anyway, there was probably traffic" Dimple sat down on the couch next to me.
Slowly everyone joined and we started watching movies. We all cuddled up into blankets for 2.
Wait, where is Mankirat? But wait! Why do I give a crap?
I cuddle closer to Tavni as we watched Clifford The Big Red Dog. Yes, we know that we're 18 and
19 years old. Yes, we know that we're childish but sometimes it's okay to do childish things. You can't be a child forever."Watching my favorite movie without me?!" I turned around to see Mankirat standing by the door frame in a grey sportswear shirt and black sweatpants.
"You're back?" He sounded a bit shocked.
"I thought I told you." Tavni answers, rolling her eyes.
"Yeah, I just forgot" He smiled his eyes never leaving mine, Oh God,
Sukhi! Shut Up!
He sat down right next to me and shared a blanket with Kulvi who whined like crazy. At the end Navi threw a pillow at his face.
After the movie ended we all went to get ready for our outing. Mankirat suggested that we go out for ice cream and to a fair Lalli used to take Jassu and me out like that when he would want something. But what would Mankmat want? I really need to stop thinking about him! Thinking about him is going to drive me crazy.
I slipped on a pair of light blue jeans and a blue beanie. When I walked out of my room to see Mankirat sitting on the couch scrolling through his phone. I spun on my heels, to head back to my room.
"Sukhi, you're ready?" Shit. I turned around and sheepishly smiled at him. He got up and slowly started walking towards me. I slowly walked backward until my back hit a wall. He had me pinned against the wall.
"Why'd you block me? Did I do something to offend you? Or are you still mad at me for bumping into you yesterday? Or is it something else?" He asked and I was speechless. We literally just met yesterday and now he has me pinned against the wall. I couldn't help but get lost in his eyes. His dark grey eyes are the most beautiful things I've seen.
"What the hell, Kamal? Mankirat shouted,
"Saaleya! Be thankful only I saw you. If the girls saw you they would've skinned you!" he exclaimed as he stood on the couch. "By the way, are you two dating?" I finally pushed Mankirat
away."No, we are not dating," I said to Kamal before turning to Mankirat."And you I expect you to stay away from me." I snapped.
What did I just do? I'm an idiot. I'm the worst. How can I expect him to stay away from me when I can't even get him out of my head? I want to make my parents I am happy but I also want to make myself happy. In that house, happiness doesn't work both ways. It's their way, or no
way. Even if I were to admit my tiny crush to him, it would do no good. We would probably start dating and then my parents would kill me. I seriously need a good girl talk"Get your lazy ass up! We're leaving!" Tavni dragged me off the couch. Navi, Tavni, Dimple, and I
rode together while the guys rode together.Should I tell them? I certainly hope Dimple is a good driver. You know what, I'm not saying anything to anyone It's not like telling them will help my situation at all. I just need to forget about my super hot roommate.
No! The sooner I forget him the less trouble I'll get into. And mumma and papa, they won't care that Mankirat is a Sardar, they'll kill us both. But why am I worried? I don't even know if he likes me. You know what, I'm gonna stop thinking about this now.
When we reached the cafe, the guys were already seated at a table with ten chairs. They all hook their food and drinks ordered. All except Mankirat.
"Lo, you girls are here, Tell us what you guys want to order." Kulvi said. We four girls rolled our eyes and Navi slapped his head.
"You didn't order your food?" Tavni ashed Mankirat.
"I was waiting for you guys? He smiled.
"Aww. Saaleya! There is no need to act all innocent. We all know why you've been like that lately. Dimple smirked at us.
Great. Now they know. How much is going to happen to me in this time frame?! I started college yesterday! Hai oye mereya Rabba! What the hell is going on?!
After stuffing ourselves, Kulvi suggested that we go to the fair that's in town. New York always has epic fairs and carnivals. Lalli would always take Jassu and me.
"Sukhi, could you go with Manny? I need gas filled in my car and Dimpy wants to come along." Ravi pecked Dimple's lips. I glanced at everyone except Manny who were pouting. Ugh? I hate them so much!
"Fine," I grumbled while Manny smiled, the girls smirked at me. I didn't even tell them! How do they know? Wait, Tavni was the one who gave Manny my number. Ugh I hate best friends
