The messages that Matt had forwarded to me made me laugh and grimace in equal measure. The first day I hadn’t shown up to school, my phone was flooded with texts and missed call notifications from Ryder and the guys. Once they had checked my location on the GPS tracker installed on my phone, the shit hit the fan. I naturally suspected there was more to that story, but Matt had been tight-lipped about any repercussions he may have suffered when his home address registered as my location.
Spending the last week with Dane has been a godsend, just the break my soul desperately needed. Everything was going great until Friday night when there was a loud knock on his apartment door. Dane and I looked at each other with matching quizzical expressions. We were not expecting anyone. He rose swiftly from the lounge and strode towards the door, his body tense as he undid the lock. From where I was sitting, I couldn’t see who was at the door when Dane cracked it several inches, placing his bulky frame to conceal further whoever was there. Several tense minutes passed before he huffed a sigh and opened the door wide, stepping aside to let the visitor in. Curiosity got the better of me, so I stepped cautiously towards the door. My movement halted suddenly when Lawson shuffled through, his shoulders slumped and his face puffy and red like he had been crying. The sight of him splintered my heart into a million pieces. Rushing forward, I gently wrapped my arms around his lean waist “Lawson, what’s wrong? What happened?” I begged, hating seeing my crazy boy so broken. Lawson’s body shivered against mine, his breathing rapid. I glance thoughtfully towards Dane, who shrugged his shoulders. Neither of us knows what to do or what is going on.
Turning my attention back to Lawson, I run my fingers through his neon pink hair and whisper what I hope are soothing words until eventually, his breathing starts to even out, and he relaxes in my arms. “Are you ok, Lawson? What’s going on?” I try again. He wraps his arms tighter around me, picking me up and walking us towards the lounge, where he takes a seat with me in his lap. “I can’t live without you, kitten. Being away from you is like dropping the pizza you have waited all day for,” he deadpans, making Dane laugh. Shooting Dane a death stare quickly shuts his laughter up. He doesn’t know Lawson is certifiably crazy and that this is him expressing his love. Even if his words are unconventional, I know he says them with sincere conviction. “I needed a break, Lawson. I was planning on coming back,” I state with a smile, hoping to calm him further. “How was I supposed to know that? I have spent days thinking you were staying with Matt. Going insane thinking he had stolen my wife from right under my nose. It wasn’t until today when Ryder finally put me out of my misery and told me you were here,” Lawson responded.
“Your what?” Dane snaps, his demeanour going from concerned to pissed off in a blink of an eye. “My wife. Please don’t make me fight you on that. I have spent weeks simping over you. You are my fucking hero Dane”. Lawson says with a sigh, stars in his eyes as he watches Dane pacing the lounge room. “What have I told you about taking strays in Lacey. Remember that crazy kitten you took in when we were fourteen?” Dane mutters. He continues when I nod, “This one reminds me of him. Is there something wrong with this guy?“. “I’m right here, asshole. You have just been demoted to second favourite hero,” Lawson states, his eyes narrowing at Dane. I can’t help but laugh at their conversation, thankfully breaking the building tension in the room. Dane sighs with defeat and sits beside us, placing my feet in his lap and pressing play on the movie we were just about to watch before Lawson showed up.
“So rainbow dash, what makes you think you will be marrying my girl” Dane questions halfway through the movie. Oh god, please not this again. “What makes you think she is your girl” Lawson counters with a smirk, gripping me tighter in his lap. Lawson has always been so touchy feeling with me from the very first moment we met and he carried me away from Ryder and the other guys and into the school, laying claim to me then and there. At first, I naturally hated that he would always do that but had grown used to it over time and even looked forward to it sometimes.
