Heaven is real. Hell is real. Their armies have been at war since the beginning of time. Our world, the Prime Plane, has been the constant battleground. The worlds are connected like one big chain link and mankind is stuck in the middle of their war for all eternity. Throughout history, man has been held in the sway of one or the other. The influence of Heaven's order allowed the creation of civilization. The influence of Hell's chaos brought on the spread of The Black Death and the Dark Ages that followed. Angels and Demons have always been among us.
Some humans with angelic ancestry are able to tap into the divine light, becoming angels for a few minutes or a desperate instant. Demi-angels, as they are known, weaponize grace to fight battles and wage wars. There are also humans with drops of demonic blood running through their veins, capable of pulling from hellfire. These Demi-demons use mayhem like a fuel to power their pursuit of passion and power.
There have been multiple times throughout the course of human history that this knowledge has been given to the public. Each time has triggered bloody conflict between factions wishing to assist one side or the other. After the last big upheaval an organization arose with the purpose of maintaining earthly peace between Heaven and Hell, and keeping their dangerous influence to a minimum. It goes by multiple names: The Order of The Hunting Crucible, The Organization, or just Demon Hunters. The Organization has kept us safe for 500 years. You've never heard of them? Well that's the point.
It has been prophesied that on Judgment Day a final battle will be fought over the final fate of man. The gates to both worlds will open and a bloody battle will commence. Demons, depraved and brutal, will take the field against angels, dedicated to eradicating anything that offends the natural order. Millions will die on all three sides, but in the end one will gain control of the Prime Plane forever.
He who controls the Prime Plane controls the fate of all planes.
Your instinct to get out of the city is a smart one, but there's nowhere we can run to avoid this contest. No matter who wins, our world will never be the same.
