The party is scheduled for the night after Freia is released from the Hospital Wing. Sirius finds himself looking forward to it, though he's not sure why – they often have parties in Gryffindor.
"Do we need to bring anything?" James asks from where he's standing in front of the mirror, buttoning his shirt.
Remus laughs loudly, "I doubt it. Knowing Hufflepuff it will be a ridiculous well stocked. Food, alcohol, weed."
"Weed?" Peter asks.
Sirius bounds over his bed to where Peter is and throws an arm over him. "Why do you think it's called Hufflepuff, Wormtail? They're all high as skunks – it's why they're right by the kitchens."
It's a complete rumour of course, though people still make jokes about it fairly often around Hogwarts. The boys laugh anyway, giggling like it's them that's high.
Sirius dithers about his clothes so long that James ends up picking them out for him.
"Thanks, dear," he says.
"Don't worry, pet," James replies, patting his head like a dog.
It's black, since James knows him well. A black tight t-shirt that is short enough to show the tattoo on his bicep, paired with ripped jeans and his signature eyeliner and silver rings. He looks good.
The tattoo is of the antlers of a stag – something James never lets him live down – he had it done the Summer after he ran away from Grimmauld Place. Hidden in the antlers are the runes for challenge and healing.
Imagine the runes are woven into the prongs of the antlers...
He never said it explicitly to James but it was done for him and his parents, Fleamont and Euphemia. The people that had given him a home. He thinks they all know anyway.
He toys with the idea of putting his hair up in a knot with his wand but decides against it, letting it fall around his face in a natural way which is actually very intentional.
When everyone is ready they head off to the Hufflepuff common room. There are a bunch of Gryffindors going and several walk with them. Lily is in a fabulous sage dress that contrasts her hair and accentuates the green of her eyes. James is walking with her arm in arm, almost being led since he can't take his eyes off her.
Sirius wonders idly if he'll ever find that. Someone he wouldn't mind tripping down a flight of stairs for as long as he can look at her.
He pushes the thought off, instead linking his arm with Mary Macdonald's who is also looking amazing, and she blushes at the attention. They'd hooked up a few times, Mary had been his first, though they've never actually dated.
Sirius hasn't dated anyone. Not because he doesn't want a girlfriend, in fact he's never really thought about it. He's just never been able to settle. Distractable, James had said once. Which is probably fair. But Sirius never wants to hurt any of the girls, it's just when someone new wants to speak to him he always wants to listen. All the girls are fascinating in their own way and he truly enjoys getting to know them. When he moves on it isn't because he's bored of them, it's just he's interested in someone else. Most girls assume that's the same thing as being bored.
