*Chris's POV*
"Hey faggot! Yeah, you! What's the difference between normal grass and emo grass? Emo grass cuts itself!"
It was Parker. Again. He was standind outside of Mr. Harris's World History class, with a group of his friends- I recognized Tyler, Keivan, and Brandon, but there were two more with him.
"Fuck off." I muttered under my breath, not looking up as I slid text book after heavy text book into the under-sized blue lockers at my highschool. I had torn the hate words off this morning, but the sticky patches from the tape remained. I heard them laughing as they walked by, purposefully slamming the locker closed as they passed. I slid my phone out of my pocket and checked the time. Shit. I had 1 minute to walk halfway across the campus to my fifth period class- English.
I took my time reopening the locker. Four to the right, 26 to the left, and back to 14. As I crammed the last binder into my backpack, the bell rang, and the halls became silent and empty, except for several disoriented freshmen.
I pulled my hoodie around my shoulders as I headed outside to cross the campus. It had started raining again. Great.
English class had barely started, but I got scolded for being late. This wasn't the first time, either. Our teacher hadn't prepared a lesson, so we got study hall. Of course, no one was really studying. I found a desk at the far end of the room, and leaned back as I turned my head to glance at the phone I had removed from my pocket. Two new texts. Both from Alice.
'Heyyy! Meet me at Robin's? I got an umbrella!' and 'You there? You haven't checked your phone since lunch. Plz tell me you're not skipping class again!'
I smiled. It was so typical of Alice to ask me that. I responded: 'Alright- meet you at 2:30, Robin's. And I haven't skipped class since freshman year :P' I pressed 'send' and looked up. Parker was hovering over my desk, leering at me. My peripheral vision told me that half the class was watching. My hair stood up on the back of my neck as I realized that no one would help me, to tell Parker to just piss off and get back to work.
"Hey, emo boy... emo fag, sitting by himself. Poor Chris, all alone. Why don't you cut yourself?" He tossed me a folded up piece of tinfoil that smelled like pizza. It was supposed to resemble a razor. I tried to ignore him and pretended to review my chemistry notes while slipping my phone back into my pocket. My phone lit up from a new text I was recieving, immediatly attracting Parker's attention. He snatched it right out of my hoodie pocket, and slid the screen-lock to check my text.
"Hey! Give that back!" I whispered loudly, not wanting to draw attention to myself. He spun around, hunching his shoulders as he read. I tried to move around him, reaching out blindly for my phone, but he just maneuvered out of the way. His lips moved as he read my message silently.
"I said, give it back!" This time I was louder, more serious. I glanced back at the teachers desk- she was half asleep, slumped infront of a pile of ungraded papers.
"Hey Shane, listen to this! 'Well okay, nice to know you're being a good boy! Love you!' And there's a heart at the end!" My jaw clenched as he immitated Alice's voice. Shane (another one of Parker's friends) came over and sneered. Parker turned towards me again.
"It looks like fag-boy here has got a girlfriend! I thought you preferred cock!"
"She's not my girlfriend! She's just... a friend!" I felt my blood pulse hot through my veins as I tried to breathe evenly through my nose.
"Why are you denying it? Is she a freak too? Another psycho cutter-bitch?"
That was it. That was all that it took to push me over the edge. I could take the hate words taped to my locker every morning, and I had learned to ignore the lame jokes and hurtful comments. That was hurting me, and I could take that. But Alice was another story- my best friend, my secret crush, my fallen angel. I couldn't control myself. Parker had crossed the line.
I felt distant. The barely-audible gasps from my classmates seemed miles away. All I could feel was the rapid pounding of my heart and the sudden, searing pain as my white knuckles collided with the side of Parker's face. He fell instantly. I stepped back, unsure of what I had just done.
