*Chris's POV*

I groaned as a blinding light struck my face. I forced my eyes open, and squinted as I searched for the source of the light- it was the sun. It had sent the beam through the crack between my bedroom curtains. But for the sun to rise past the trees in my back yard and come in through my window it would have to be at least 10:00...

I threw back my covers and jumped out of bed. Shit!I was late for school! I swung my head from side to side, looking desperately for my phone. I could have sworn that I had left it on the corner of my desk! Now how was I supposed to contact the school to tell them I'd be late?!

In a surge of panic, I tore down the stairs and into my kitchen, where the home phone was, but before I could reach it, I noticed a lined piece of paper on the counter. I tried to calm down and read it, as it was addressed to me.

Christopher-

Your father is at work, and I am not going to be home until 9 tonight. If you have a problem, ask Mrs. Sanders, don't call us. Make use of yourself and finish your homework, your father picked it up from the school this morning. It should be outside of your room. We have taken away your phone and laptop, if you need the internet for your homework, you may ask your father in the evening. You are not permitted to leave the house at all. Mrs. Sanders has been asked to alert us if you do. Stay out of trouble.

I let out a sigh of relief as I remembered that I had been suspended. Of course, no one had bothered to wake me up, since I would be staying at home for the whole week. Then I grimaced. It was so like my stepmom to think of everything! Like taking away my phone and laptop- those were my only means of communication, and I realized that I had forgotten to call Alice last night. I looked back at the home phone, but it looked like it had been disconnected, too.

I walked over to the front door, wondering if I could just run over to Alice's house after school and talk to her directly. Opening the door a crack, I peered out at the still street outside. The house across from ours was Mr. and Mrs. Sanders's house, and if it was true that Mrs. Sanders was watching me, then running out was nearly impossible. Sure enough, the old lady was on her front porch, reading a home-making magazine. It didn't look like she'd be leaving anytime soon.

I sighed and wandered back inside. Then it hit me- I was starving! I hadn't eaten since lunch yesterday, and that meant it had almost been 24 hours since my last meal.

I dug through my freezer and pulled out a breakfast burrito. Popping it the microwave, I reread the note, making sure I hadn't missed any important detail. Well, my dad had brought my homework, at least, and that would give me something to do.

Beep! The microwave timer went off, and I grabbed my breakfast burrito, messily stuffing it into my mouth. The outside was far too hot, and burnt me, and the center was still frozen. But that didn't really matter. It had filled me up, and that's all that counted.

Slowly, I made my way back upstairs. I bent over and picked up the large pile of homework that I had to finish before next Monday. Easy! When I got to my room, I drew back the curtains to let in some natural light, and began my homework. Most of it could be done without the internet, but I set aside the assignments that couldn't. I would finish that in the evening. Three hours later, I was done.
