"Get out of my coffee shop, Andersen!"

"Shove it up to your ass!" I shouted as I untied my apron from my body and flung it to the ground. This is the third job that I've been fired from. The last two wanted me to work outside of my availability, but taking care of a two-year-old, that's difficult to do. This job, The Coffee Bean, fired me because I found my now-former boss and another employee hooking up in the janitor's closet. They fired me because I caught them.

I let out a loud exasperated sigh, pulling out my phone. I speed-dialed my best friend, Emeline. A ring and a half, and the call had been answered.

"Paige? Shouldn't you be at work right now?" I could hear the cries in the background, coming from my little sister, Amira.

"Why is Mira crying? Is she okay?" My "mom-mode" kicked in, making me walk faster toward my house.

"She's fine. She's just upset because she wants more fruit snacks. Why aren't you at work? I can hear cars passing by." Emeline asked.

I let out another sigh, giving her an answer, "I was fired."

"Again?! What did you do this time?"

"It wasn't even my fault! Brock was in the janitor's closet with Julie, having sex! And I caught them! I was going to tell HR about it, since he has been giving Julie more hours than the rest of us, and it's not fair. Not when she's only been there for two months, and I've been there for six months." I huffed angrily while crossing the crosswalk and taking a right. I could see my house in the distance, inching closer as I took steps towards it.

"Oh, shit? That's fucked up. You should talk to HR anyway because I'm pretty sure that is illegal."

"It's whatever. I was going to quit anyway because this job does not cover all the bills and Mira's medical expenses. I don't even have enough to pay for her cochlear implant." I say as I walk up the steps of my patio and into my house. When Mira was a newborn, my parents were told that she could not hear out of either ear. Of course, they didn't care enough to help her learn sign language or get her to the doctor for a cochlear implant, so her communication skills consisted of grabbing things, pointing, or crying. Ever since I got custody of her a year and a half ago, I've been teaching her as much as I know with sign language, so that she can communicate freely with other people.

"Well, I did hear that a big company, Lennon Enterprises, was needing an assistant. Check online. I'm sure they pay well." Emeline said, hanging up the phone once she realized I had walked through the door.

"I have no experience with that, though." I went over to my little sister and gently tapped her shoulder to get her attention. Mira looked up, her big green eyes peering up at mine with excitement.

"Sister!" She signed. I picked her up, lifted her in the air for a moment before finally placing her on my hip.

"You should apply for it, Paige. It doesn't hurt to try." Emaline suggested, picking up my sister's toys off the floor while grabbing her things.

Lennon Enterprises did pay well; I knew that. My aunt worked there for a few months and called the CEO a no-good, arrogant piece of crap to his face.

Do I want to work for someone like that? Hell no, but the money.

"Okay fine. I'll apply for it tonight but I highly doubt I'll get a call back from them." I said, placing Mira in her playpen.

"Nap-Nap" I signed.

I watched as Mira's eyes became glossy and her bottom lip started to quiver. Getting her to nap was always an issue. Usually, I'll just let her cry it out until I get tired of the screaming, and then I'll lay down with her.

"Good. I have a date tonight so I'm going to leave now, and get ready" Emaline smiled happily. My eyebrows raised, looking over at her with astonishment.

"Really?! Oh my gosh! What's his name?" I walked towards her.

"Her  name is Jenna. And now I have to go or I'm not going to be able to look nice." She kissed me on the cheek before leaving. The sound of Mira's crying filled the quiet house. I turned around to look at her with a frown. I walked up to her playpen and picked her up. The crying immediately stopped.

"So spoiled," I mumbled, grabbing my laptop, and making my way into the bedroom. I tucked Mira in and lay next to her. Her tiny arms wrapped around my arm as she cuddled up to me, her head on my chest. Ever since Mira was a baby, I would lay her on my chest and hum, knowing she loved feeling the vibrations. With my free hand, I ran my fingers through her hair and hummed a soft lullaby.

I smiled softly, watching the little girl fall asleep in my arms.
