"hey louis," lyra said, walking in to him playing some classical music, aj standing nearby.
"hey ly," he replied, not missing a beat; on both the piano, and the conversation.
"ruby did not seem happy when i walked past her. she okay?"
aj looked at the floor.
"the kid bit her," he replied, almost hesitating on the next note. his voice was a little less happy, but lyra could barely notice. she walked towards him, and sat on the ground, next to aj.
footsteps echoed through the large room as someone else walked in. lyra and aj turned to see who walked in, and it was the girl who the group assumed was taking car of aj.
"clem!" aj exclaimed, running towards her, and hugging her.
"you're okay," clem said, kneeling. she rested her chin on aj's shoulder, closed her eyes, and exhaled a deep breath.
lyra smiled while louis kept playing whatever he was playing.
they let go of each other and clem patted him down, for whatever reasons lyra couldn't understand.
"i was afraid you were..." he trailed off, obviously not wanting to continue his train of thought while clem patted him down.
"i'm okay," she said, finishing up. "and you know what you are?"
"what?"
"ticklish!" she exclaimed, tickling him for a brief minute.
"but," she said it so quickly, lyra barely heard. "aj, listen to me. that girl out there says you bit her. is that true?"
aj stayed silent until clem said: "answer me, aj. did you bite her?"
"i didn't mean to. she snuck up on me."
"still, no more bites."
"no more bites," aj said, sounding beaten.
by now, louis had stopped. he turned to them and said, "you're not dead. that's good."
lyra elbowed him. "of course that's good, idiot."
"like you would say something else."
"i would, thank you very much."
"then what would you say?"
" 'hey, you're up. how you feeling?' instead of that."
clem chuckled, and they both looked at her and aj.
"watched your kid for you."
"my name is aj."
"excuse me. i watched aj for you."
"thanks, i appreciate it."
"no problem. well, not no problem. he was bit of a handful. but i got off light compared to what ruby went through."
"aj doesn't like people coming up behind him," she explained.
"don't ever do it," he said, almost sounding like an accidental threat.
"got it, bud," lyra said, smiling at him. "thankfully, this dork was her to calm him with his silly music." lyra got an elbow from louis for that. he started playing again.
"i'm louis," he said.
"and i'm lyra. nice to meet you."
"clementine. nice to meet you as well."
louis stopped. "oh, yeah! totally forgot. marlon left your bag in her somewhere."
"don't worry, i've got it." louis started playing again she picked up the bag and brought it behind aj as she emptied its contents. lyra watched as she took out her knife and placed it in its place and placed on her hat.
aj walked over to her, and she dug around some more. she pulled out what looked to be a pistol with a short strip of cloth wrapped around its handle and held it out to aj. louis stopped playing and looked concerned.
"um..." he said as aj took it. "double um..." aj opened the chamber and spun it. "does he know what that is?"
"it's dirty," aj complained.
"clean it," clem told him.
"maybe later," he said, closing the chamber and putting it in his pocket. "back you go."
"where it belongs."
"amen," lyra muttered, a little worried that what looked to be a five-year-old had a gun on him.
"dude, that can't be a good idea. that thing's bigger than him." lyra chuckled at the comment. "is it actually loaded?"
"yes," aj replied casually.
"i'll guarantee he's a better shot than you."
"probably true."
"hey," louis said, kind of offended. "you guys do you thing, i guess." he continued to play the same song on the piano.
"you don't know any others?" clem asked. he stopped mid-note.
"well, there is one... but you're armed." he shrugged and started playing "oh my darling clementine," a personally favorite of lyra' sad she drifted off into the music, not paying attention to clementine telling louis that she loved the song as well. he stopped and lyra wished he would go on.
aj laughed, and clem asked him what he thought about it.
"i don't know. it's loud."
"it is."
"loud is bad."
"loud isn't always bad, bud. take me for example, i used to blare music, and i'm not too shabby, i do say so myself," lyra told him, walking over more. clem and aj chuckled while louis shook his head, smiling.
"come press this key," he said, and aj backed up closer to clementine. "this one right here."
"go ahead aj, press it," she said, putting her hand on his shoulder. he walked over and pressed a key, then two others louis told him to press.
"you're a natural," louis said, smiling at him, and aj smiled at clem until they all heard marlon call out, "hey!"
"have you seen rosie?" he asked?
"no, i haven't," lyra said.
"me neither," louis followed up.
"shit. we've got a bit of a situation out there. um, i hate to ask, you just coming to and all, but we could really use a hand. you up for taking out a few deadheads?"
"you know i am!" lyra exclaimed, taking out a santoku knife from her satchel that was resting on her hip. clem nodded in agreement.
"you too, louis. get your ass in gear." he ran out.
louis sighed. "fine." he got up and went to the main gate behind lyra, who trailed behind clem and aj.
