Ellie's P.O.V
I thought I killed him. I thought I had rid the world of him the morning I took Miranda's wand away. I thought he was dead.
Yet here he stood, at the heart of the battlefield, like an ancient shadow come alive. Time had worn on him, or rather, it had not. He looked the same as the last time I saw him, yet different. Darker. More dangerous. His eyes, once a natural hazel, now obsidian black, radiated an unnatural void. The mountain prison must have changed him, and not for the better.
A chill settled over me, tightening my chest. The energy around him pulsed, cold and suffocating. I swallowed the lump in my throat, unwilling to admit how much fear clawed at me.
His gaze swept the clearing, resting on the scattered bodies, the fallen warriors, the rogues. As if appraising trophies, he smiled. A smile void of warmth. Then his eyes locked onto mine.
"Round two," he said, his voice the only familiar thing left. The sound sent a ripple of bitter hope through me, maybe, just maybe, this fight was not lost.
That hope shattered with a flick of his wrist.
The corpses stirred.
From the mud, from the leaves, the dead rose, dragging broken limbs and empty eyes. Hollow, soulless puppets of his will.
A collective step back from the pack, warriors filled the clearing.
"Do not show fear," Miranda's voice rang out, sharp and commanding. Every head snapped toward her.
"These demons feed on fear. They grow stronger the more you give them," she warned, eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that grounded me. She nodded slowly, signaling it was time.
I clenched my fists as my gaze swung back to the rising dead.
Our weapons, steel blades and forged iron, would do nothing. These bodies were no longer bound by mortal rules. Dark magic had brought them back, but not as they were. They were hollow vessels.
"We can't kill the dead," Miranda said softly, "They will keep rising unless we cut the source. These weapons are a means to protect ourselves."
She turned sharply to the warriors, lifting her wand. The air hummed with power as she began chanting. The words were ancient, a mixture of old tongues and sharp syllables, laced with purpose and dread.
I watched as a shimmer rippled along the edges of every sword, spear, and arrow within reach. The blades glowed faintly, silver blue veins running like lightning through their metal.
"This spell will burn through the darkness animating them," Miranda explained without pausing. "It will not kill the Virexus, but it will sever the link animating these corpses, allowing you to break them down and keep them from rising again."
"Strike at the joints," Miranda called, her voice sharp. "They are still dead. You just need to hold them back."
Third Person P.O.V
As the warriors clashed with the enemy again, Ellie, Miranda, and Lisa began to slip away.
Miranda muttered a cloaking spell as they moved further behind the treeline to the east, a rise in the land surrounded by thorn-laced trees and shrouded in natural mist. Lisa added a layer of frost magic, veiling their energy signatures with a cold shimmer that dulled sound and hid movement. In moments, they vanished from view.
Behind the veil of illusion, they arrived at a hidden clearing.
This was the heart of it.
A leyline fracture, ancient, jagged, and pulsing beneath their feet, glowed a deep, eerie blue. Miranda had discovered this place long ago. It was the most unstable point of the leyline, and the only place strong enough to sever the Virexus's tether to the void. The Virexus, unknowingly, had anchored himself here. Drawn by the piece of him he left behind in Ellie.
