𝐍𝐎𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐈𝐍 life is meant to last. Youth is snatched away from innocent children, time too short for one to hope, and dreams disappear when the dreadful morning alarm rings.
She's going to be top scorer again, that Ko Yeo-Jin girl plays like a mantra all throughout Shinsa high school. Frankly, the girl should feel out of place. It's an elite school where children of rich parents buy their way into, while Ko Yeo-Jin, someone on a half-scholarship should not even be pleased that her name is being passed around.
But it is. And Yeo-Jin tries to drown out the chatter every chance she can. However, her name still lingers no matter how many times she spits it out.
" Hey, wanna bet what Ms. Tteokbokki is gonna score this exam? " A classmate whispers loudly enough for the said girl to hear.
The other two giggle, their parents had not been affected by the IMF crisis and continued living lavish lives behind closed doors. " I thought we weren't going to call her that, she'll know it's her. "
" Why? Her mom owns some dirty tteokbokki restaurant. It's fitting! " They all burst into laughter. Yeo-Jin turns towards them slowly, her expression unamused by their little taunt and bullying. Be the bigger person, be the bigger person Yeo-Jin.
The three girls stop when she meets their eyes. " What? It's not very nice to eavesdrop you know. " That was a lie. They'd spoken loudly in hopes she would've heard it. In their eyes, they were above her; people who actually had to work and wonder when their next meal was.
She glances at each of their nametags, the wheels in her head turning as she tries to recall who exactly they were. There's a string of silence before Yeo-Jin's eyes lit up.
" Oh! I remember who you guys are now! " They flinch at her sudden enthusiasm. " Weren't you guys like, last in our class for our previous exams? ... Yeah, now that I recall, you girls even had to attend remedial lessons. You know, if you ever have trouble with homework feel free to ask me. Or in the future if you guys ever need a job, drop by my mom's dirty tteokbokki restaurant, I'm sure she'll be glad to have another pair of hands to help wash the dishes. "
She huffs before shuffling her papers and textbooks together and struts out the classroom, dirty? Yeo-Jin was infuriated.
Her feet face the blue bulletin board, all the student's test results pinned with thumbtacks in a list going from highest to lowest. And on top of the list, in prestigious black printed ink had been her name.
