Waking up early the next morning, I groaned and rolled out of bed—literally. I hit the floor with a thud, the sudden impact jolting me fully awake. Grumbling to myself, I stood up and shuffled into the en suite, the cool tiles under my feet reminding me that I needed to get moving. The day ahead was going to be a busy one, and there was no time to waste. I jumped into the shower, letting the warm water wash away the remnants of sleep.
As I scrubbed myself clean, I mentally prepared for the tasks ahead, reminding myself of the responsibilities Lady Dimitrescu had entrusted to me. The warm water was soothing, and by the time I stepped out, I felt more alert and ready to face the day. Heading over to my wardrobe, I picked out my work uniform.
Today, I opted for black tapered trousers and black suede ankle boots with flat heels. I chose a white button-up shirt but decided to forgo the waistcoat; I just didn't feel like wearing it today. The simpler outfit felt more comfortable, allowing me to move freely without feeling too restricted.
Once I was dressed, I left my room and hurried down to the kitchen. The castle was still quiet, the early morning light filtering through the windows and casting long shadows across the corridors. When I reached the kitchen, I made myself a bowl of porridge, adding a spoonful of honey and some mixed berries for a bit of sweetness.
It was a simple meal, but it was filling and exactly what I needed to start the day. I sat down at the maids' table, enjoying the rare moment of peace as I began to eat my breakfast. The quiet was comforting, allowing me to gather my thoughts and mentally prepare for the day's duties. Just as I was getting lost in the rhythm of eating, I heard a familiar voice.
"May I join?"
I turned my head to see Florence standing there, a tray with her breakfast in hand. She looked much better than she had yesterday, her posture more relaxed, though there was still a hint of caution in her eyes.
"Of course,"
I said, offering her a small smile as I gestured to the seat across from me. Florence smiled back and took a seat, setting her tray down in front of her. She had a simple breakfast as well—a piece of toast with some jam and a cup of tea. We ate in companionable silence for a few minutes, the clinking of spoons and cups the only sounds filling the kitchen. It was a peaceful start to what was sure to be a busy day, and I was glad for Florence's company.
"I wanted to thank you again... For speaking up for me yesterday."
I shook my head, brushing off her gratitude.
"You don't have to thank me, Florence. I just did what was right. You didn't deserve to be punished for something you didn't do."
Florence looked down at her plate, her expression thoughtful.
"Still, it means a lot. Not everyone would have done the same."
I didn't know how to respond to that, so I just nodded, continuing to eat my porridge. The truth was, I hadn't really thought about it in that way. I had just acted on instinct, wanting to help someone who didn't deserve to suffer unjustly. But Florence's words made me realize that maybe, in this castle, doing the right thing wasn't as common as it should be. As we finished our breakfast, I glanced at the clock on the wall, noting the time.
"We should probably get started,"
I said, standing up and taking my empty bowl to the sink.
"There's a lot to do today, and Lady Dimitrescu will be expecting everything to run smoothly."
"Well, since you're the head maid now, what are my chores for today?"
Florence asked, her voice carrying a mix of curiosity and anticipation.
