One day, I felt a deep yearning to step outside the castle walls and visit a place that held both sorrow and solace for me. Scarlett's grave. It had been far too long since I had last visited, and the weight of that absence was beginning to press heavily on my heart. I knew it wouldn't be easy to ask Lady Dimitrescu for permission, but I felt that it was something I needed to do, not just for Scarlett's memory but for my own peace of mind. Finding a moment when Lady Dimitrescu was in a relatively good mood, I approached her cautiously. She was seated in her study, reviewing some documents with a look of concentration, but as I entered, her eyes softened slightly, and she looked up with a small, welcoming smile.
"What is it, my dear?"
she asked, her tone warm but curious. I hesitated for a moment, gathering my thoughts before speaking.
"My Lady, I was hoping I could ask you for a small favour."
Her eyebrow arched slightly in interest.
"A favour? What might that be?"
Taking a deep breath, I stepped closer, my voice soft and earnest.
"I was wondering if I could have a couple of hours to leave the castle. It's been a long time since I visited my friends grave, and I think it would do me some good to pay my respects."
Her expression shifted, a slight frown marring her features as she considered my request. I knew how protective she could be, how reluctant she was to let me out of her sight, especially beyond the safety of the castle walls. The village and its surrounding areas were dangerous, and Lady Dimitrescu had made it clear on more than one occasion that she didn't want me venturing out alone.
"Outside the castle? You know it's not safe out there. Why now?"
Her voice tinged with concern. I swallowed, trying to find the right words to explain how much this visit meant to me.
"It's been on my mind for a while. She was important to me, and I feel like I've neglected her memory by not visiting for so long. I just... I need to see her grave, to talk to her, even if it's just for a little while."
I admitted, my gaze dropping to the floor. There was a long pause as Lady Dimitrescu studied me, her golden eyes searching my face. I could see the conflict in her expression, the way she was weighing her protective instincts against my request. Finally, she sighed softly and leaned back in her chair, her gaze still fixed on me.
"Two hours...No more. If you're not back within that time, I will come looking for you."
she said firmly, her tone leaving no room for negotiation. Relief washed over me, and I gave her a grateful smile.
"Thank you, my Lady. I promise I'll be back in time."
She nodded, though there was still a hint of worry in her eyes with her permission granted, I quickly prepared for my visit. I dressed warmly, knowing that the weather outside the castle could be unpredictable, and I gathered a small bouquet of flowers from the garden—Scarlet's favourite. As I made my way to the main gates, I could feel Lady Dimitrescu's gaze following me, her concern palpable even from a distance. The trek to Scarlet's grave was longer than I had anticipated. The familiar path through the woods seemed to stretch on, the distance magnified by the weight of my thoughts and the emotions churning inside me. The forest, usually a place of solace, felt more foreboding today, the shadows between the trees deeper, the silence more profound. I pushed forward, determined to reach the place that had been on my mind for so long. When I finally arrived at the small clearing where Scarlet's grave lay, a pang of sorrow gripped my heart. The sight before me was far from what I had hoped for. The flowers I had placed during my last visit, once vibrant and full of life, were now withered and dead. Their faded petals lay scattered across the ground, a sad reminder of how much time had passed. The grave itself, once well-tended, was now surrounded by a tangle of weeds and overgrown grass, as if nature had begun to reclaim it. For a moment, I stood there, taking in the scene, feeling a deep sense of guilt and regret. Scarlet had been someone important to me, someone who had always been there when I needed her. And yet, I had let her grave fall into disrepair, a neglect that seemed to echo the distance that had grown between us since her passing. Determined to make things right, I set to work. I carefully cleared away the dead flowers, pulling up the weeds that had taken root around the grave. It was slow, methodical work, but I welcomed it, using the physical activity to channel my emotions, to focus on something tangible. As I worked, I spoke softly, as if Scarlet were standing beside me, listening to every word.
