When everyone remembered each other, Merlin was absolutely smothered in hugs, the most rib-cracking one from Percival.

The parallel modern AU is like this:

Uther Pendragon is the owner and founder of Camelot industries. They have a hand in almost every business, including the mafia and the black market. Still a dick, still has all these fucked-up rules and morals, and still is a tyrant who occasionally has fatherly moments.

Arthur Pendragon is the so-called "heir" to the company, therefore he is the representative for meetings that Uther can't be bothered to handle. Throw in the closeted gay and daddy issues and you have the  perfect recipe. Oh, and

The knights are the personal guard of "The royals" as the public jokingly call the Pendragon family.

Gaius is the personal doctor of the Pendragons and also helps out the knights every now and then. He still forgot Merlin was supposed to come on a Wednesday, and his eyebrow still outs all other eyebrows to shame.

Now, Merlin is Gaius's nephew, who comes to stay to escape the small town life. After meeting Arthur is a very unfortunate way, and undeniably being attracted to the prat, saves his life, in which Uther immediately hires him to be Arthur's personal assistant.

Morgana is the adoptive sister of Arthur, and is best friends with Gwen. Gwen is her personal assistant. She later on swears revenge on Uther and breaks off on her own, creating a lot of trouble.

Gwen,  who's in dire need of a gay best friend, (yes, I went with the stereotype. Deal with it), which is where Merlin steps in. Originally dated Arthur for a while, but then started a steady relationship with Lancelot.
