There are some stories that don't have happy endings. Sometimes it's because that's the way of this broken world we live in, but sometimes it's because they end in the middle.
Sam's story, is, of course, not over. He went on to meet Timothy in To Live and To Breathe, and begin to carve out a new life for himself in the land of his mother's birth despite everything—all because one person believed in him, and showed him that he could be better than what the loudest voices seemed to say.
