Bakugo POV
Never thought I would say it but I miss the damn air mattress. My body ached as I got up from this hard fucking couch. I glanced at Eijirou who was watching the door, yawning loudly, while Carmilla slept peacefully in the armchair. We slept in shifts just in case Kain decided to make an appearance. Carmilla happily let us stay since A. She was scared out of her mind and B. We needed a place to stay.
He didn't make an appearance yet. I wished he would so we could get this fucking over with already. The first thing I wanted to do after settling this was get a wallet because carrying around a collective 700$ in cash felt like a robbery waiting to happen. The second thing I wanted to do was shake down Douglass for some goddamn hints on how to find something valuable enough to buy our way home. That hag, Phyne, said that there were two ways to get home. Find her other earring which, given how many centuries ago it was stolen, would probably take decades of endless searching. Versus the other, more dangerous seeming option of stealing some old shit that the keeper of pathways, Mer, would like so she can let us ride the train back to our universe or some shit. But even in the midst of all that shit I couldn't help but worry about the other thing. The thing worse than not being able to get home soon. How we supposedly cause Y/N to die.
-The Day Prior-
I waited for the moment she'd rip my head off but it never came. Her hands stopped, then she backed up. I stayed frozen as she sat, perplexed. She glanced at the both of us, her eyebrows pulling together. She touched her earring, concentrating for a moment before letting it go. I could barely bring myself to breathe. My hands were just now starting to heat up. I couldn't have even attempted to stop her.
"I've never seen her smile like that..." She murmured before straightening her posture.
"I won't kill you." She said and both of us let out a breath.
My hands slightly shook as the adrenaline coursed through my veins with nowhere useful to go. A heavy feeling settled in my chest. We didn't stand a chance against her. I couldn't remember the last time I felt so completely at someone else's mercy. Her lips pressed into a thin line before she took another sip of her tea.
"I can't bring myself to kill you if that's the alternative." She said, "And I don't understand how after all that she'd-"
Phyne cut herself off with a frustrated huff. She looked at us and set her cup down, her eyes serious.
"You both have already ruined her future. That much seems certain."
"What-" I choked out.
"You cause her so much suffering. So many horrid futures await her for your sake." She murmured, her eyebrows pulling together. "And yet...she still-"
"Please tell us what's going on." Eijirou choked out.
She looked at him, no mirth in her eyes. Eijirou stiffened and even if it was futile, I got closer to him to jump in if needed. Her eyes flicked to me, unimpressed before she spoke.
"No matter what future, she gets irrevocably damaged trying to save you two. I wanted to prevent that by killing you. However, she gets herself killed after she finds out. So there's no point."
"We...hurt her?" I asked softly.
"She hurts herself protecting you. There's no avoiding it. At least not in a way I can see." Phyne said.
We sat there in silence, taking in what she was saying.
"What...happens?" I asked.
"A few of the futures are: She gets mutilated by her landlord for eternity, dies as a marionette for Kain, her soul gets stolen by a crone and her body becomes a ghoul, and more scenarios along that line." She said, "Those are just a few of the fates that await her."
