"Arthur," Tori moaned, rolling over in bed as Sadie's long, loud wailing and peals of sharp, staccato thunder shook the house. "Arthur, baby. Your turn."

Groaning, Arthur rolled out of bed. He kissed Tori gently with a quick, light peck on the cheek and padded on bare feet down the hall to the next room, where Sadie's crib was. She lay there screaming and crying and thrashing her arms and legs about with a look on her face that was so angry it made Arthur pause and chuckle at her.

"I'm angry too, sweetheart," he chuckled, picking her up and holding her in his arms to soothe her. "Real angry."

It was storming outside, and Arthur vaguely wondered whether the lightning or the driving rain slamming against the windows had awakened her. She didn't seem to need changing, but something was clearly bothering her, because try as he might, he couldn't get her to calm down.

Sadie's tiny fists beat against his chest and her legs kicked furiously, but her cries slowly became quieter until she looked up at Arthur with small, trusting eyes, whimpering and panting from the effort of screaming. "See?" Arthur whispered, snuggling the tiny baby to him. "Your Pa is right here. I love you so much. You ain't alone, sweetheart."

"She's probably hungry," said a new voice from behind Arthur. He whirled around, only to come face to face with none other than Mother Superior Calderón.

A bolt of lightning hit not twenty yards from the house. It lit up her face with a pale, silvery, ghostly glow, and the loud roar of the thunder was so deafening that it shook the whole house, rattled the windows, and set Sadie off crying again.

"What the... Why..." Arthur grunted, so caught off guard that his body trembled with adrenaline. Without even really noticing he'd done it, he'd shifted Sadie to his left arm and drawn his gun with his right. It was second nature, and it was pointing directly between Sister Calderon's eyes.

Now that Sadie was here and Levi Cornwall hadn't played his final hand yet, Arthur slept in his gun belt and bandolier, with his cattleman revolvers safely holstered and his Lancaster repeater propped up beside the wall near his head for good measure.

He'd be dead before he let something happen to his family. As it was, he already saw Isaac when he looked into Sadie's eyes. He wouldn't make the mistake of not being prepared this time, wouldn't let the world take her and Tori as it had Eliza and his son. But Sister Calderón was not the one she needed protecting from.

"Jesus," Arthur grunted, holstering his gun. "You scared the devil out of me. What are you doin' here at this hour? Watchin' the kid sleep?""

She was not smiling. In fact, her face looked somber and sad, even perhaps a bit regretful. Still, there was a twinkle in her eye as she looked down at Sadie, her gaze leaving Arthur's. "No, Mr. Morgan. I'm here to see you, as a matter of fact. May I speak with you while you feed your daughter?"
