INT. BAR - NIGHT

Dim warm lights illuminate the bar. A young, pristine looking woman walks into the bar. ALICE EDEN, strips off her gloves and slips them inside her coat's pocket. After, she removes her coat and hangs it on the rack. She scans the empty bar to find a suitable seat. Her eyes become caught in a young man who sits in the corner of the bar with a light stack of papers on his side as he writes hastily. ELLIOT ADAMS looks up from his work pile to catch he gaze but Alice turns her head away in an elegant embarrassment gesture.

Alice takes one last glance at Elliot. She gently smiles before making her way straight to the bar.

INT. BAR - CORNER ROOM - NIGHT

Elliot watches her pass by to the bar. He downs his glass of whiskey before gathering his papers and stuffing them in his messenger bag. He adjusts his suit before standing up and making his way to the bar.

INT. BAR - NIGHT

Alice takes a seat in front where she looks in the mirror of her compact to apply a dark rouge lipstick. She slaps down the compact and dumps it into her bag in a snappy manner. Elliot takes the seat beside Alice.

ELLIOT

Miss.

Alice nods in response.

ELLIOT

Can I offer you a drink?

ALICE

I'm afraid I don't drink.

Elliot glances at the wine glass in front of her. He gives her a pointed look.

ALICE

It's only a pretense.

ELLIOT

A cigarette?

ALICE

Nor do I smoke.

ELLIOT

Then why come to a bar if you aren't here to drink?

ALICE

Perhaps... I'm only here for the company.

Alice looks over her shoulder to look at Elliot. Elliot stares blankly.

ALICE

Why are you here tonight?

ELLIOT

Well... I usually come to this bar. I'm sort of celebrating yet working alone. I multi-task but--

ALICE

You're so tense, are you nervous?

ELLIOT

You're dressed quite extravagant tonight. Any reason?

Elliot says quickly. Stunned, Alice looks at Elliot. She smiles slightly.

ALICE

I'm only wearing my pride tonight.

ELLIOT

Is your pride in mourning?

Elliot's eyes flick up and down in a gesture to Alice's slim black dress. Alice's face falls downwards.

ELLIOT

I'm sorry! That was rude of me to presume.

ALICE

It was not my intention to give you that impression.

ELLIOT

...Then can I assume you're wearing sophistication?

ALICE

You're not wrong.

ELLIOT

What are you wearing then?

ALICE

I'm wearing complexity.

ELLIOT

You wear it quite nicely.

ALICE

I'll take that as a compliment.

ELLIOT

You're quite intriguing.

Alice's eyes widen but quickly recovers by adverting her gaze. She stares at the glass in melancholy. She shakes her head as her lips part slightly.

ALICE

You don't like me.

ELLIOT

Why not? You're an attractive and charming lady.

ALICE

I'm afraid that you mistake me for someone else.

ELLIOT

Who could I have mistaken you for?

ALICE

I am only a fiend in a clever mask.

Alice slowly slips out a small folded note from her dress. She raises it to the side of her face before pressing a light kiss on the note. She places the note in Elliot's shirt pocket. She leans in to whisper at his ears before retracting back. Alice takes the final sip to her glass of wine before leaving the bar.

ALICE

Adieu.

Elliot is frozen. He is paralyzed in confusion. Hastily, he grabs the note to carefully read it. He looks up to give a look of shock.
