Kai’s Pov

“Well greenie, you caused a bit of a scene by making a run for it. But, to be fair, you did patch up ben.” Alby said, standing in the middle of the room, with me sitting on a chair behind him, also in the center of the room.

“Ben, how’s your leg buddy?” A boy, now named Zart, called out to Ben at the other end of the room with his leg propped up on a chair, per my instructions. Ben cupped his hands around his mouth to make a mega phone, “It hurts like Crud, but otherwise ok! It’s stopped bleeding!” he yelled to Zart in response. Alby nodded at his response.

“Good that. We don’t need any more runners down.” he Paused and sighed, knowing what's to come with his next words. “The greenie said that Ben should stay off his leg for three days minimum.” he stated my words and a rise of volume and words broke out.

“What?!”  “We can’t afford that kind of setback!” “Is this greenie nuts?!” “Does he know what’s at stake here?!” “Why couldn’t he just run for the maze like a normal greenie?” “This isn’t good Alby.”

‘Well aren’t they opinionated.’ I thought sarcastically to myself. The noise continued to rise and Alby couldn’t get it to die. “Oi! Shut your bleeding traps! I gave that advice because Ben’s leg could have given out, stranding him in the middle of the maze, with no way out and no strength to go on before the hawks of death come!” I shouted while standing up and walking to alby.

“Just from looking at you guys, I can tell that not one of you shanks knows jackshit about being a medic! I only did that because I can remember healing people! I did what was necessary to help Ben heal, and I’d do the same for any boy that needs it!”

I finished my shouting match with a raw voice, but finally brought down the volume of the boys. I was breathing heavily and looking at the boys with a glare, daring them to challenge my judgment. I might only be 14 or so, but I know what I'm talking about. Alby just looked at me with raised eyebrows, since I had been quiet for the whole 2o minute long meeting and hadn’t said a thing, even when it sounded slightly offensive… it was by the way.

“Well, you heard the med-jack. He gave a reason for Ben’s forced three day break, and it’s a pretty reasonable reason.” He said whilst pointing to me. ‘Wait, med-jack? What is that?’ I was confused, so I voiced my thoughts. “What’s a Med-jack?”

Alby turned to me to answer. “Well, like you said, we don't know jack about medicine, and you do. Med, for medic, jack, because you know jack about medicine.” I was silent for a bit before nodding. “That-that makes sense, okay then, I’m a Med-jack.”

I paused, and thought about my name, or lack of. “If that’s my job now, then where is my name? I either don’t have one, or can’t remember it…” I finish, looking at the boys for an answer. The blond boy who was watching silently up until now, came forward and put his hand on my shoulder. “It’s gonna be ok. It’ll come back in a few days, we all went through it.”

I looked at him with hopeful eyes, only now showing my fear of showing up in a strange place. I genuinely was scared, but had pushed that aside to help someone in need. “My name's newt greenie, pleased to meet you.” He stuck out a hand for me to shake, and knowing he’s a good person, by some instinct, I shook it. “Nice to meet you Newt, I’m a med-jack, and I have no idea what my name is.” I said in a deadpanned voice, completely serious. This caused a laugh to come from the boys.

‘Okay… that's weird, but I'll humor them…’

‘Wait. Where am I going to sleep? And work?’ As the laughter died down, I voiced my thoughts. “Hey, where am I going to sleep? That is if I’m staying here for a while, and where am I going to work? I can’t keep working in the grass, it’s not clean enough for that.” I state with a little bit of concern in my voice. Alby took my concern into consideration, and took a moment to decide with the council. So he sent me back to the chair in the corner.
