For a moment, neither of us move. Not because we're scared, but because we're comfortable. I contemplate suggesting we just tell her, but I refrain, figuring now is not the right time. Today and its events have been stressful and judging by the tone of Nic's voice, I'd say news has travelled fast regarding her brother's dismay.
"Just a sec!" Informs James, resting his forehead to mine. "We need to get moving, kitten."
I smile, briefly kissing his lips. "Okay."
I quickly redress, struggling to locate my panties.
"I can't find them," I whisper.
James just smirks.
"I'm serious! Where the hell are they?"
I check under his desk, to no avail.
"Jamie! What's taking so long?" badgers Nicole, growing restless.
"Just leave them," insists James, readjusting his tie. "Do I look unfucked?"
I run my gaze up and down his body, satisfied with his appearance. "Yep."
He smiles and—after giving me a quick kiss—goes to open the door for his sister. I have no idea what the plan of action is. I don't know how he plans on explaining my presence here, but I trust he knows what he's doing and I'll follow along as best as I can.
"Finally!" She stresses, breaching the threshold.
She stops upon seeing me.
"Sloan was just checking on me," explains James, casually. "I assume you've heard?"
She nods. "Why was the door locked."
"Police have recommended I stay vigilant," he replies, well versed in his excuses. "Just as precaution."
Her eyes widen with concern.
"Is it—"
She forces herself to halt whatever is on the tip of her tongue. I know most of what I know about the Hudson's because of Nicole, but I get the feeling she's reluctant to share anything on this particular subject.
"I should go," I offer. "I just wanted to make sure you were okay after everything."
James smiles and I can tell by its tightness he feels bad for not involving me in this family matter.
I do my best to reassure him with a smile. "I'll see at home, Nic."
"NO!" They both insist.
I'm a little taken aback by their reaction.
"Wait for us in the library," instructs James. "I'll walk you both home."
I look between the two, convinced they're blowing everything out of proportion. Then again, without knowing the facts, I'm in no position to pass judgement.
"Okay."
I quietly close the door and consider sticking around to eavesdrop. In the end, I decided against it. James wouldn't knowingly put me in any danger and if he isn't ready to share his past with me, I'm going to respect his boundaries.
"Sloan!" Jeremy approaches with caution. "How was it?"
I sigh, feigning discomfort. "Brutal."
James has a reputation with students who show up late to his class, and I don't want to draw suspicion to us by downplaying his strictness.
"Let me buy you a coffee to soften the blow?" he suggests. "I'm helping Mollie with her dissertation topic."
"Can I help?" I ask, in need of a distraction.
