Grace was glad she had had a large cup of coffee that morning. The caffeine would give her enough energy to babysit Delilah, who was jumping around all over the place in a kind of nervous excitement.
"Do you see him?" asked Delilah. "Is that him -- wait no, too short, and that guy over there has the wrong eye color. Where is he?" She was becoming frustrated over finding this guy who may or may not exist that she had met in her dreams. School hadn't even started yet and she was worrying her fantasy dream was just that -- nothing but a dream.
"Deep breaths Delilah, breathe in breathe out.", Grace advised in an attempt to calm her down. "Don't go finding love, let love find you." Delilah looked at her like she was crazy and said "This is no time to be all philosophical Grace, this is serious!" Grace sighed. "It's going to be a long day." She then proceeded to drag Delilah over to the gym where the principal would give a big "welcome to high school\ first day speech".
When they arrived there was already a large number of fellow students seated in the bleachers. Delilah and Grace managed to get a seat in the last row in the back, where Delilah and her eagle eye proceeded to look around for any sign of Carter. He had to be here, he had to be real, he just had to. But alas, there was no sign of him anywhere. She was starting to lose hope.
"Maybe he's late, or sick or just lost in the building." suggested Grace in hopes of cheering her up and giving her some sort of confidence. Delilah gave a defeated sigh and mumbled "Maybe." She half-heartedly looked around while the councilers were giving the first day orientation. After a long morning of tours, it was time to go eat lunch.
"Hurry up Delilah," called Grace from just outside the lunchroom doors, "Emily saved us a seat and the line for food is starting to get long!" Delilah, having gotten lost in her disappointment, had come to a halt halfway through the hallway, wondering what could have gone wrong, and that maybe some dreams were meant to stay dreams. "I'm coming." She called back to her and started to walk over to her. There was just one small problem. When she was just a few feet away from the door, she crossed in front of where the hallway she was standing in intersected with another hallway. Coming down that hallway was a boy. He was running fast. Neither of them were paying attention to where they were going and didn't notice the other until it was too late. They crashed into each other and fell onto the floor. "Ow! Hey, watch where you-- " and Delilah stopped mid sentence when she recognized the face of the boy lying on the floor next to her. The face she had dreamed of for so long.
Carter.
