Kate sat back, inching away from Y/N. Her breath stopped when they asked that question. Had they lost their memory while they were under all this time? Yelena had stabbed their torso, not hit them over the head. There was no way this could have happened.
"You're joking, right?" she asked, laughing through it awkwardly.
Their lips pursed, confused as to why she was asking about someone with such a random name. They'd never heard it before. "No?"
Her heart rate started skyrocketing, wondering what could've happened to cause this. She couldn't imagine telling Yelena all of this after what she'd gone through. "You don't remember what got you here? What we've been doing for the past month?"
Y/N thought hard, trying their best to remember every detail from before they went under. "All I remember is that someone was after me because of Wanda. They made their way in and stabbed me. That's it."
Kate's eyes widened. It wasn't that they'd forgotten about her, but that they'd forgotten who she was entirely. It wasn't adding up and she couldn't figure out what would've caused this to happen. "So you don't remember the girl you've been head over heels for the past month and a half?"
They smiled, "Of course I do and she's sitting right here with me."
Fuck, she thought. Something had happened while they were under and she had no idea what that could've been until it hit her. "Y/N, I'm going to make a call really quick. I'll be right back, okay?"
"Can I get a kiss before you leave?" Their eyes drooped, saddening at the idea of the girl they'd had these feelings for was leaving them high and dry.
Kate didn't want to upset them, but she couldn't bring herself to follow through with this. They didn't really like her, not like that at least. Y/N was in love with Yelena and she would figure out what the hell happened to erase her from their memory.
She leaned in, kissing their forehead before heading out into the hallway. Her hands were shaking as she flipped through the contacts in her phone. If her theory was right, this whole compound might be upended.
"Clint, are you with Wanda right now?" she asked as he finally picked up on the fourth ring.
"Yeah, what's going on? Everything okay with Y/N?"
She cleared her throat, "No. They can't remember who Yelena is and I have a bad feeling..."
He picked up where she was going with the statement as she trailed off. Kate could hear him as he moved the phone just away from his ear to talk to her, "Wanda."
"What?" Kate heard her respond.
"What did you do?"
"I don't know what you're talking about."
Kate swallowed hard at the tone of Wanda's voice. She knew that whatever came next wouldn't be good and she wished she would've waited to have this conversation until they were back. Clint being alone with Wanda at the height of her emotions was terrifying.
"Kate is with Y/N and is saying that they don't remember who Yelena is."
"That's unfortunate. Maybe she should talk to Bruce about it."
Her voice stayed stoic, unmoved. Kate's theory had to be correct. "Clint, give her the phone." She finally interrupted. The receiver crackled as he handed the phone over to her.
"Hi Kate," her accent was thicker now. One thing Kate had picked up about Yelena and Wanda was that their accents always grew when they were in any heavy emotion. Anger, sadness, no matter what it was. Wherever they came from was brought back tenfold.
"What did you do?"
A quick breath as a small laugh left Wanda's nose, "What had to be done."
The phone beeped as Wanda hung up without further explanation. Kate had known exactly what happened as soon as the call ended. From what she knew, Wanda had never been down here alone with Y/N but she'd done a lot to heal them.
Whatever memories were wiped had to have been taken while she was helping Bruce. That was when she was most angry and if she hadn't been the only one who could've helped, then she would've stayed back and made sure Yelena paid for what she did.
In her anger, Kate assumed she did what she felt needed to be done... but if Y/N ever found out about this, if they could manage to restore those memories, then they would never forgive her.
And god forbid Yelena find out what Wanda had done. She was already set on killing her as is, but this would send her over the edge. Honestly, she wasn't sure if the cell would even hold her if she did find out.
But Yelena stood no chance against Wanda. She'd begun studying her powers more and more after finding out what she was able to do to help Y/N. At this point, she could manipulate any sort of reality to do exactly what she wanted. It was fun to watch but eerie to think back on now.
Kate peeked back in the room, looking to see if Y/N was waiting for her to head back in. Luckily, their head was rested back on their pillow and their eyes were closed. Though they were awake now, Bruce had noted that they would be exhausted a bit after their interactions with people. At this moment, Kate was completely okay with that.
She sank to the floor outside of their room, doing her best to take in what had happened and how she might be able to fix it. Wanda was the most powerful person in the entire world and the only way to fix this would be convincing her to do so.
"Bruce!" Kate yelled out as he turned the corner to do his hourly check on Y/N. He jumped back, not at all prepared to be yelled at by someone when the entire compound was empty. She laughed as he took a deep breath, "I need to talk to you about Y/N."
