I run down the street, my bus pulling up at the stop a little ways away.
"Wait!!" I wave my arms to get the driver to notice me. He keeps the doors open until I get there. I hop the stairs and show him my bus pass.
"Thanks." I say. I search the bus and find a seat. There's no one else on right now so I have my pick of seats. I make my way to it and end up tripping over something. I catch myself before I hit my face on the floor and look back. There's a foot sticking out in the aisle. How did I not see him there? I growl and stand up. The person the foot is attached to is staring straight ahead as if nothing happened. I clear my throat. Nothing. I stare daggers at the back of his head.
"Excuse me." I say. Still nothing. "Excuse me sir!" I say louder. Not a sound.
"Hey! Buddy!" I say and shake his shoulder. He falls over. Huh? I look closer. His eyes are closed. He lays limp on the seat beside him. Is he dead? I look to see if his chest is moving. Sure enough, it rises and falls at regular intervals. Asleep huh? Oh well. Guess I'll just leave him be. I take the seat right behind him just in case he wakes up. But he doesn't. I reach my stop and stand up. Wow. I've never seen such a peaceful sleeper. I mention that he's there to the driver and he says he's been like that for an hour. He tries waking him up at every stop but he doesn't budge. I thank him and get off. I walk quickly down the street to my house. I reach for the door handle and stop. My eyes. What am I gonna tell my mom about my eyes? Contacts? No I hate putting my fingers near my eyes. Natural change? No they've been green for my whole life. Why would they change now? Maybe she just won't notice? All these thoughts run through my brain as I stand with my hand frozen in mid air. I see a light flick on and the door opens a second later.
"Mina? What are you doing standing here?" Says my dad. I look up at his face towering above me. He's a very gentle man but his height makes him slightly intimidating. I gulp and pull my hand out of my bag. Luckily I had grabbed my key before reaching the door.
"I thought it might be locked so I was looking for my key. Hi dad!" I step inside the house and hug him. He closes the door and I kick off my shoes.
"How was the first day?" He asks.
"Uh-um it was fine! I made a few friends already!"
"Oh that's great! Why were you so late?" Says my mom coming out from the kitchen.
"Oh I-I was hanging out with them at the café down the street from the school!" I lie. My parents simply smile.
"That's great hon! Dinner is just about ready so go put your bag away and wash up." Says my mom.
"K!" I cheerily hop up the stairs and into my room. I throw my bag on the bed then go into the bathroom. I close the door and look at my eyes. The light is so much better here. I can see that they aren't just solid light blue, they're kind of swirling around with white and silver as well. The colours almost seem to be moving. Like clouds against a clear blue sky. Or in this case, since it means ice, frost slowly melting from a window. I put my hand on the mirror to lean in and look closer. As I look in the mirror starts to fog over. I lean back and see that it's starting to crystallize. I feel a kind of tingling from my hand and look at it. The frost is emanating from my hand! I pull it away as fast as I can. The shape of my hand is imprinted on the glass. I watch as the frost slowly starts to recede towards the hand print again. It all disappears as if it was never there. Well guess that cancels out my doubts of this being real. I wash my hands quickly then prance back down the stairs. Mom has made a stew pot today. I help her set out all the dishes and then we kneel down at the table.
"Thank you for the food." We say in unison. Then we pick up our bowls and fill them up. I start to stuff my face with the delicious meat. I didn't realize I was so hungry!
"So Mina, anything interesting happen at school today?" Asks my dad. I almost choke on my food. Dad you have no idea.
"Well, my new friends are kinda strange if that counts as interesting."
"Strange in what way?" Asks my mom.
"Well, one of them has a hair style that's completely inappropriate for school but it suits him-"
"Him?" Says my dad cutting me off.
"Yes, him, and another one acts kind of like a cat-"
"What's his name?" Says my dad, again cutting me off.
"TJ, and the other girl looks like a little pixie or something."
"TJ huh? How do you know him?" Says my dad.
"Oh good grief honey she has a friend that just happens to be a boy! It's not like they had sex!"
"Mom!" My mom and I look at each other and start laughing. This is what I mean by her being more like a sister. My dad just sits there staring like we're crazy. After dinner I help my mom clean up then go up to my room again. I close and lock my door. I strip off my school uniform and fall backwards on to my bed. I unhook my bra under my back and pull it off, then lazily sit up and pull on my night shirt. I button it up then kneel down at my little table and open my laptop. Time to do a little research of my own. I crack my knuckles and open a search window. Powers of an ice elemental is what I type in. I get a couple of Wikipedia pages, some TV show websites, a quiz that shows what element you are, and a list of top 10 anime characters with ice powers. I click the first Wikipedia link. It shows the basic elements and then the other ones that I apparently have. I click on ice. It gives a list of things people with ice powers can do. Freeze breath, ice beam, freezkinetics. These sound like either really stupid TV show names for stuff you can do or Pokemon skills. I click on one that doesn't have a description and it shows some other things it could be called, and what should pop up, ice-make Magic. That's when it hits me. Oh my god, I'm Gray Fullbuster. And thus commences the fangirl freak out session. I watch different clips from Fairytail episodes displaying what Gray can do. After about an hour or so of watching and learning from a million different YouTube videos about ice magic, I decided to give some stuff a try. I stand up and search the room for something I can freeze. My eyes land on something simple, my picture frame. I stand with my legs apart and bend and twist, making a fist with my right hand and putting it against my open left hand. Just like Gray. I take a deep breath and shoot my hands forward. Nothin. Well I guess I have to say ice make something right? But what? I take position again and say "ice make bird?" Zip. Not even a cool breeze. How did it happen before? All I did was lean on the mirror. I go to move towards my wall mirror and end up flat on my butt staring at the ceiling.
"You ok up there?" Shouts my mom.
"Yeah, just slipped!" I call down. I sit up and fall right back down again. What the heck? I turn my head to the side and am met with a floor covered in something shiny. I sit up again, carefully this time, and look around. The whole floor and halfway up my walls are covered in a thin layer of ice! Hold on a second, I think. I'm sitting on a floor covered in ice and the only thing on my butt is my panties. Why don't I feel cold? Well I guess it makes sense that an ice user wouldn't feel cold since they're always cold. I try not to laugh out loud when my first thought is 'the cold never bothered me anyway'. I give up trying to do some special trick with my ice and get ready for bed. I go into the bathroom and brush my teeth. I stick my toothbrush under the water and my ice travels up the toothbrush to the water and freezes it mid stream! I let go of the brush and it stays suspended in mid air, stuck to the water by the ice. It's getting worse. I wait until it thaws and put everything away as quickly as I can and run back into my room. Luckily the ice on my floor has thawed by now so I don't slip and fall again. I don't know what might happen during the night so I put on gloves just in case. The ice may very well come off me anywhere but it makes me feel better. I crawl into bed and stick in my headphones. I play my going to sleep music, which is basically just slower anime music. I turn off my light and close my eyes, laying on my back, breathing slowly in and out. I have to put everything that happened today out of my head. It's the only way I'll be able to sleep. I drift off listening to the calming voice of Maki singing "aishteru banzai" from Love Live school idol project.
