Today was the day of goodbyes. As Billy and Stu finished packing at their houses, Randy and I spent our last night together in Woodsboro.
"Is your memory getting better?" I asked looking over at him. We lay on our backs, beer bottles in hand as we gazed up at the stars. "Not really. I remember everything up till the attack." I hummed in response. "Do you remember me calling you a bitch-ass?" He laughed. "Yeah, I in fact do," He turned over, using his elbow as support for his upper body. "And I was right the whole time!" I mimicked his action. "What do you mean?"
"Whenever there is alcohol, drugs, or sex involved, someone gets killed! Basic logic!" I laughed sitting the rest of the way up.
"Let's get inside, it's starting to get chilly..." We picked ourselves up and made our way into the Meeks' living room. I took a seat on the corner of the sectional, Randy was sitting on one of the bar stools against the counter. "Did you hear about Tatum?" I shook my head. "No, I haven't spoken to Dewey since I was in the hospital..." Randy sighed. "There's not going to be a funeral."
"No funeral?" My chest began to ache, and I tried to keep my breath steady. "Yeah, parents chose cremation..." He pulled the bottle of beer to his lips taking a long swig. "Oh..." My shoulders slouched. "It's just so weird..." I tried to analyze his movements, to see how he was feeling, but he was stationary, almost idle, nothing moving but his lips. "Out of everyone that could have died... It was only Tatum. Stu, Billy, you, me, "He took a pause, "Sid, we all made it out. Why not her?" The thought raced through my head. Did Stu want her dead that badly?
"Maybe she knew... Maybe she didn't trust Neil, and Neil made extra steps just to make sure she stayed dead..." He shrugged. "Yeah, maybe..."
It was silent. The sounds of crickets could be heard from outside, and then the sound of keys at the front door. Randy quickly stood up, jogging over to take my drink from me, and dumped the rest out in the sink, leaving both bottles there. He sat back down in his seat and threw me a piece of mint gum from the counter. I placed it into my mouth and began chewing just as his mom walked in.
"Oh! Didn't expect to see you here Val!" She greeted setting her purse down on the counter. "Yeah, I'm just over to spend some time with Randy before heading out." I smiled.
Donna Meeks was a nice lady. She had shoulder-length brunette hair that was starting to turn gray and cooked the best Risotto.
"Where are you heading again?" she asked going over to the sink. Randy looked at me with wide eyes before I answered. "Pigeon Forge, Tennessee."
"Why so far away?" She picked up one of the bottles. "Your damn father must be drinking again..." she picked up both bottles and placed them in the trashcan.
"I just need to get out... In Woodsboro, the press is insane, hopefully, in Tennessee, there will be a dispensary or two to keep me sane."
I held two fingers to my mouth to symbolize a blunt and Randy laughed. "Oh please!" Donna spoke trying not to encourage the childish behavior.
"How is Anita doing, Valarie?" I thought back to my mom, and how frantic of a person she was becoming. "She's doing great! Surprisingly," I let out a nervous laugh that Randy caught upon. "That's good to hear... During the trial, she seemed like a total wreck!" The older lady slid off her shoes. "She was! She was terrified of me going out without her for a few months!" Donna smiled. "I understand. With you, you were in critical condition for far longer than Randy. Besides the memory issues, he should be fine, but the doctors told your mom that you had a little chance of making it out alive!"
"Mom..." Randy spoke. Donna stopped her rambling and began towards the direction of the hallway. "I'll be up in my room if you two need anything."
She exited and my eyes stared at the spot she once was for a few seconds. "I'm sorry about that... I swear, sometimes her mouth runs away from her!" I smiled and looked down at my hands. "Guess it runs in the family!" I turned my head up to see him flicking me off. We spent the night laughing and bringing up old memories. Those with Tatum and without... Those with a happy ending, and the ones that ended wrong.
And of course, the ones we will forever wish to change...
