A startling noise sounded to the left of us, then to the right. The pitching high screen repeated over and over again in our ears. The screen repeating the same thing over again, ¨ocean, oceania, overseas orpheus. ¨
But it made no sense, orpheus has nothing to do with the seas, or with water, so why was that calling his name?
¨A clue.¨ someone had shouted over the high pitch screaming of the victim.
¨A clue?¨ someone else had asked.
¨Yes, a clue. A clue, one sent from the gods.¨ the voice excited with the ´clue´.
¨The gods? Surely they wouldn't help poor mortals that don't worship them.¨ an younger male said with sarcasm laced in their voice. ¨wouldn't it be suspicious, that the gods would give a ´clue’ or ´gift´ to mortals that are stranded in the middle of the ocean. ¨
He had a point though, why would the gods give us a clue or a gift to find the missing piece. Ever since we had boarded this rotten ship, people have gone missing or insane. And what was left was a simple tiny clue, but they never made any sense. Each clue would be left after one mysteriously died of an unknown cause. But this time was different from the other times. All the other times no one screamed like the damned, that are punished in hell.
¨What are the clues so far?¨ a small girl asked.
¨ We have Joey, clide, jennifer, and mike that had left a clue behind before their death. Also George, Tim, Jon, and William that left clues in the walls or on the floors with blood or other dipict things. The last one before this one was so disgusting, we have yet to clean it up.¨
Joey left a trace of life.
Clide left a seashell.
Jennifer left an old necklace.
George left a secret behind, still yet to uncover.
Tim left a body with a gift.
Jon left a sea charm.
And William left a bag of sea salt.
There is no way that we are going to uncover this mystery before the old sea takes us all. I looked to the girl who had asked for the clues, but had been given no straight answer.
A necklace flashed against her shirt, gleaming with intricate details with a scene of ruins. Small words, so tiny that not one could see with the eye, said a prayer. A quote or beg of forgiveness. The small details remind me of when I was out in the fields, before I had to oversee the seas. Out in the fields it was peaceful, I would play my music hours after hours, thinking of when I would get a wife. Maybe one day I will see a pretty face that I will one day be married to. Her name, Eurydice, to me is a beautiful woman. But I can never see her, not until my music plays in the towns and villages that light up the sky at night. But I've never seen her again. My focus goes back to what is happening on the deck of this rotten ship, cusered by the gods and only the gods.
The girl stared at me with a benevolent look on her face. The gaze reminded me of someone, but I couldn't place it. The screaming had stopped long ago but I just now noticed.
¨ The man that was screaming like the damned in hell was Teri, the guy that was always silent. Pretty sure he couldn't talk but this place proved me wrong. ¨ the girl had told me, but mumbled the last part to herself.
I never recalled knowing a Teri that came on to this ship, I only remender nine people coming onto the ship, not ten.
¨May i see this umm, Teri. ¨ I asked the girl in front of me. She gave me a weird look but shook her head, and laughed at something that wasn't there.
¨What is so funny? Do I have something on my face?¨ with that the girl doubled over and laughed even more. I stood there unaware of what to do.The girl only continued to laugh and then waved me to come with her. I followed with much confusion, from the deck of the small ship to the below deck. The light low with only candles lighting various places. The light makes certain spots overt, while other spots are obscure. Water leaks through the floor of the belly of the ship.
Silent breaths came from the back of the room, the darkest place. Something rolled out of the darkness.
¨AAAAHHHHHHHAAAAAHHHH.¨ I screamed as the small wooden childrens toy rolled on the ground. ¨NOpe, No, NOOOO. I'm leaving. ¨ I yelled right next to the girl, who was scolding me.
¨What in the ungodly scream was that, you're going to wake the dead. You wanted to see this guy, so you did this on yourself.¨ the girl rolled her eyes as she whispered at me.She put her finger to her lips, a gesture to silent someone. I closed my eyes and took in a deep breath then let it go, not prepared to see what was in the darkness. I took a step forward, I looked at the dark corner, my eyes adjusting to the dark of the room. A radel came from in front of me, and a sigh came from behind me.
I turned around to look at the girl, who looked different from what I had recalled. Before she was short with light brown hair and slightly tanned skin. She had worn a purple toga with small leaves embroidered on the edge of it. She still had slightly tanned skin but with a different texture, like bark. She looks shorter but taller but looks older, her brown hair falling to her shoulders. She still wears the purple toga but the small leaves are now bigger. The leaves have more detail and stand out.
I watch as she lifts her hands up to my face, she smiles slightly before bringing her hands down. The look in her eyes was sorrow, the look of a lost one dying or one who had passed. She stepped back and took her gaze away from my eyes.
¨I'm so sorry my love, I never wanted to hurt you. But it has to be this way. I'm glad I married you.¨ she whispered. ¨ Goodbye Orpheus.¨
The moment she said my name, she slipped into the darkness.¨EURYDICE.¨ I screamed at the top of my lungs. I didn't notice till now that it was her, that it was finally her. After all these years, I finally got to see her. But she was gone within seconds.
My vision started to get blurry and I looked down to see a snake on the floor, that was where she was mere seconds ago. The snake dripped venom from its fangs, the snake little but mighty. I stumbled away from the snake but tripped on a wooden ball. I fell, but I never stopped falling.
I woke up with five women standing over me, they all wore hides from an animal and carried sticks wrapped in ivy. They all had a twisted smile on their faces. One hands me a cup.
¨Drink up.¨ She simply said, her voice sweet and light unlike the madness in her eyes and smile.
I took the drink worriedly, not wanting to drink the contents inside. I looked inside the cup to just find wine. A dark red with hints of purple, I drank the liquid from the gold cup.
The last thing I see are the five women waving to me. I hear all say in allusion, ¨ Good night.¨.
My vision blurs then goes black. The taste of wine laced with poison in my mouth.
