Chapter three

Leaf-bare came and left. Toadpounce had taught Adderpaw more fighting and hunting skills, and the pair of them were doing a review of Adderpaw's skills with Swiftpaw, Driftpaw and their mentors by doing practice fights and hunts. I think they're ready for their final assessment, don't you agree?" Poisonedpetal and Birchsong nodded, smiling.

"We'll be watching you, don't forget. Yes, you can go now." Birchsong smiled, sensing the apprentice's excitement. The apprentices bounded off in opposite directions, all excited. Adderpaw opened her mouth slightly, catching the scent of a mouse. Luckily, she was upwind of it, so she dropped into a crouch and walked slowly forward, before pouncing. The mouse tried to bolt, but it was to late and it died before it could get anywhere. Purring happily, Adderpaw headed back to the meetup spot, having met the requirement of one piece of prey. Toadpounce was waiting there, his tail tip flicking slightly. "Ah, you're back. Well done, Adderpaw." Adderpaw nodded, purring still. A little while later Driftpaw and Swiftpaw bounded along, Swiftpaw with a small vole and Driftpaw with a crow. Birchsong and Poisonedpetal arrive no less then a second later, both smiling. "Let's return to camp, then?" Poisonedpetal flicked an ear. Everyone nodded and turned in the camp's direction.

"Toadpounce! Toadpounce! Owlwillow's had her kits!" Mistleclaw called, spotting the group, though she seemed rather sad. Toadpounce immediately bolted over to the nursery, followed by Adderpaw and Driftpaw, worried for their mother's sister. "They're beautiful, Owlwillow. Simply beautiful." Toadpounce purred, nudging his mate before getting a worried expression. "Owlwillow?" Sheepstorm padded forward, looking crushed. "She didn't make it through the kitting. I'm sorry." Adderpaw and Driftpaw gasped in unison, before Sorrelflame darted forward. "I have a method that may help." Everyone instinctively moved back, watching the young medicine cat with bated breath. Slowly and gently, Sorrelflame pressed her front paws against the queen's chest and began pushing ever so slightly. Within a minute, Owlwillow gasped and her eyes fluttered open. "Owlwillow!" Toadpounce surged forward, his eyes full of happiness. "Thank you, Sorrelflame! I don't think I'll ever be able to repay you!" Sorrelflame merely bowed her head. "It was StarClan's wish that I help her. That's all." Owlwillow and Toadpounce curled up beside one another, purring and licking their newborn kits. "Perhaps it is best you two leave. I heard you were doing your final assessment today." Adderpaw nodded, smiling. The two apprentices padded out of the den, and Toadpounce emerged later. "I'll tell Thistlestar about your assessment. I have the highest confidence in you two and Swiftpaw." Toadpounce mewed.
