"So how is...the man you have shacked up with?" Mary asked from the other side of the curtain. Meanwhile, I was having the duck and dodge the seamstress' assistant's shaking hand as she attempted to NOT stick me with a needle.
I assumed that this was payback for abandoning her during brunch. I mean fair, that was my bad.
"He's fine." I answered simply. Mary didn't usually inquire about the Murphy himself, specifically, "Why do you want to know?"
"No reason..."
"Obviously there is a reason. Otherwise why bring him up? I figured you would be so blissed out from all of the wedding stuff that we'd spend the entire time chatting about that...Ouch!"
The assistant shot me a sheepish looked as she pricked me, still she asked, "Who is getting married?"
"My mom to her dad." I answered.
"And her hopefully sometime soon." Mary called out. "She has been engaged for years."
That certainly made the assistant perk up.
"So that's what this is all about." I huffed out. "Not everyone who gets engaged gets married immediately. Unlike our parents, he and I have like our entire lives ahead of us."
The assistant below mouthed 'can I see it?'
I complied, bending down to pick it out of my bag and putting it back on my finger, so that she could appreciate it in all of its magnificent glory. She went slacked jawed as she stared in awe. It was gorgeous, and expensive knowing Murphy. I know that a lot of time and effort on his part went into it and we both absolutely love it.
Far too eye catching to keep on my hand for the most part, however. Which is why we were considering getting another ring that would be simpler, more of an everyday ring. Honestly, I get worried sometimes I will miss some important shot because I'm too busy staring at my engagement ring.
"Even more of a reason to get married soon, that means more moments of wedded bliss."
"Murphy and I are perfectly content as we are." I couldn't help but sigh, I had hoped the quick conversation about it at brunch would be all I would hear about it. Obviously I was wrong.
"I am just excited for you. Excited to plan your wedding!" Mary gushed, "Of course I have been having fun bonding with your mom and helping her."
"Can we just focus on the wedding that is actually happening soon? Thanks."
"Noves, you can't put your wedding off forever." The seamstress below me seemed to almost be doing a better job as she ate up the drama.
"I'm not. Murphy and I are just happy the way we are now. We will get married when we feel like it. Honestly, if people continue to bother us then you know we would be willing to just keep putting it off for pure spite."
That managed to shut Mary up, for the moment at least. I knew this wouldn't be the last time I had her yammering in my ear about getting married. She just feels a little lonely, and it has to be hard to watch your dad and your best friend in love.
Obviously not together! No, I mean...you know her dad is marrying my mom! I don't need to clarify this any more. I am done.
We finished up with our dresses and thanked the lovely seamstress and her assistant, who only poked me a few dozen times more after that.
The next day at work, I found myself waiting outside my boss' office terrified I would be fired. Why you may ask? Well, I have no idea.
Probably because I lost my edge and no one is trying to kill me anymore so every photo I take is boring and basic. As if half of the photography team isn't old and boring and basic and...oh my god I am spiraling.
