9-year-old Jersey stood on the stairs as she watched her mom and brother zay'air argue, again. This scene had became sort of a routine at this point, every week it would be about a new topic. This weeks just happened to be about the money found is zy'airs room. Andrea found out that zay was still in the streets after he said he got a job. Technically he did get a job just not the one she wanted. They weren't dirt poor but they definitely weren't balling like Jeff becoz either. Zay did a lot of things to provide income some of which included selling drugs . He was told what to sell and he did it no questions asked But, when andrea went in his room and found wads of money she assumed that's how you got it and she was right. Now Zay didn't want to sell drugs, I don't think anybody does but, at the end of the day you gotta do what you have to do.
Andrea didn't really have a job and if she did she couldn't keep it. She had an ongoing drug addiction that she wasted all her money on. Given these details you would assume she doesn't provide well for her kids and you would be right. Many of these things contribute to why Zay had to step up and provide for his little sister. Their mother was a crackhead who couldn't care less about taking care of her children in any way. You see Andrea's thought process was simple, she never wanted children so she doesn't feel she should provide for them.
"Then get out" Andrea screamed in her oldest son's zy'airs face. The voice levels have risen by then and it was now a screaming match. "Then what, huh? You gonna take care of Jersei. You can't even keep food in the fridge. You care more about the men you have running in and out the house than your daughter. How you going to take care of her when you can't even stay sober long enough to take care of yourself" he yelled back, obviously not using his inside voice, the neighbors were probably eating this shit up.
Andrea knew it was true and that's why she reacted without thinking, Zy'air had hit a soft spot in her bitter heart. Her hand raised and connected with the right side of zays face. The sound echoed throughout the house as everybody seemed to have froze in shock. Jersei no longer sat on the stairs, having walked away after Zays grand speech. Through the crack of her door opening she saw zay storming up the stairs and rushing into his room. Assuming he was just going to cool off she continued to look out her window at the kids playing on the street.
The care free smiles on their faces, Jersei wonders what she did in her past life for her to have to deal with this shit show she called a family. It had to have been something horrible, maybe she was a murder or something.
The old wooden door creaking open broke her out of her thoughts. There stood Zay with two bags on his shoulder. He dropped them both and came inform of Jersei. " where you going?" She asked in a low tone. Her face scrunched as she looks up at him. She sat quietly as he explained that he had to get out of this house. How he couldn't take it no more. Through out his explanation she quickly understood that he didn't plan on taking her with him on this jailbreak.
"Don't tell mom I gave you this. It for school, food and clothes that it" he said dropping a black duffle bag in front of her. She didn't open the bag assuming it was full of money. She nodded her head still trying to wrap her mind around the situation. He knew that she was smart and when would spend the money wisely. She stood up and hugged her brother extra tight thinking it would maybe make him stay but she was wrong.
Zay kissed his sister forward and whispered soft " I love yous" before letting her go and fixing her clothes. He sighed again. "I love you, I'll be back I swear" then he collected his bag walked out. She could hear Andrea pleading with him to stay, probably realizing that he made all the money but Jersei didn't care to listen and neither did Zay as she heard the door shut not even a minute later. The thought only dawned on Jersei after he was gone, she didn't have anybody else. What was she supposed to do now?
To say the long 5 years matured Jersei would be an understatement. The matured eyes and rapid beats of a heart spoke for themselves. From tense shoulders to guarded thoughts. After the 3 year mark she assumed it was Safe to say zy'air wasn't coming back. She couldn't blame him but that didn't stop it from hurting any less. Many nights of doors opening and a hope blooming in her chest, that her brother was finally here. The nights of hope slowly turned into anger and heartache, he wasn't coming back and she knew that.
Andrea and her antics only got worse after he left, more men, more drug and extra abuse since she was the only one left. Through hardships and battles Jersei focused on her school work and figuring out a way out of here. She needed an escape and fast.
