You Are the Difference

Loki is suspicious.

This isn't entirely out of the ordinary; Loki tends to pass a good deal of his time by suspecting anyone and everyone who crosses him, and figuring out their truths in the meanwhile. Right now, the person currently taking up space on Loki's radar is Tony Stark, which only adds to the fun of the whole thing.

Stark is currently afire with nerves, as judging by the fact that the guy's gotten up to pace a frantic circle around the room three times now. He riddles with his watch, he checks his phone, then sits back down. Something is happening, Loki is sure of it.

A few minutes later, Loki's theory is confirmed. FRIDAY pipes in over the speakers to announce that someone is in the elevator on the way up, and although the AI doesn't say the specific name of this visitor, Loki can tell from the way Tony brightens that this must be the source of his worries.

The elevators open with a pleasant sounding ding, and Loki tosses a casual glance over his shoulder so he can figure out the identity of the person causing Tony Stark so much stress. Perhaps he should ask them for some pointers.

Loki is greeted by the sight of a woman striding briskly towards them. She seems vaguely familiar, although Loki can't recall ever meeting her or how he would know her face. Loki can also guess how she knows Tony- she walks with the confidence that only comes when you live a fairly comfortable life, as Tony himself is apt to say.

She dresses well, too, her crisp jacket looks well made. This is another sign that she's well off; many of the newer heirs in this city like to flock to designer brands as soon as they can, although the rich brocades only signal their inexperience. From what Loki can tell, it's far easier to pluck a gaudy ruby from someone's throat than pry a suit from their frame. He's certainly tried his hand at theft to know.

Needless to say, Loki is fascinated. He'd even go so far as to label himself bewitched, although Loki typically prefers to be the one doing the bewitching. He isn't used to getting caught up in the affairs of mortals, even though he's technically out here living on their dying dimes. This woman is different, though. She certainly walks and talks as if she believes herself to be different, and perhaps that is where the difference lies.

Tony beams as soon as he sees her. "Y/N! To what do I owe this sudden meeting? You didn't specify on the phone, which usually means that I'm in trouble, but you look happy. Should I be happy, too, or fear for my life?"

Y/N grins, dagger-sharp. "I'll let you decide that for yourself. L/N Enterprises is having its annual gala in about three weeks' time. I'd like to see you there, both as a business associate and as someone to make the small talk bearable."

Tony looks relieved, perhaps that he doesn't have to fear death after all. "Oh, you should have said that we'd be going to a party beforehand, I wouldn't have gotten so worried. You know me, I'd never turn down an opportunity to wear a fancy suit and get a little too tipsy in front of news cameras if I can avoid it. Give me just one moment so I can grab Pepper and make sure we've got our dates straight, but I should love to be there."

Tony excuses himself with a smile, leaving Loki alone with the woman. He takes this additional moment in between Tony's swift departure from the conversation and the closing of the door behind him to further study the woman. Now that she's listed the occasion for her chat with Tony, Loki realizes that he's heard the name after all.

L/N Enterprises is one of the biggest business conglomerates in town, or perhaps across the entire globe. Typically, this would mean that she'd be neck and neck with Tony and Stark Industries to secure the title of best in show, but it isn't the case.

Loki remembers Tony talking about being old friends with the heiress to L/N Enterprises, which is why they don't have to hold public disputes to garner attention. He also remembers Tony talking about Y/N's sheer ambition, how her ferocity to get ahead is hardly rivaled, no matter the type of hardy tech exec who tries to stand in her way.
