Naruto smiled widely as he told Shikamaru the news. The expression on the lazy boy's face afterwards though was something Naruto wasn't expecting to see. His shoulders deflated a bit as he started to grow worried at the reaction.

"What's wrong? Why do you look upset...? Did I say something bad?" Naruto quietly asked, eyes trying to find Shikamaru's who was avoiding his.

Shikamaru reached for Naruto's right hand and sighed out. His eyebrows were scrunched together, his expression looked as if he was choosing his words carefully. "This... isn't reality."

"Well I know that of course! But we can make it like reality, as long as we are together-"

"No, that's the problem! You can't force yourself to stay in your head and be stuck in this dreamland. It's going to harm you mentally, I don't want you to be in anymore pain while grasping onto this fantasy. I want you to live out your life in the real world, where your reality is."

Naruto's expression shifted, trying to make sense of what Shikamaru was saying to him. His eyes clouded up a bit as he rested his other hand with the one he was holding. He squeezed Shikamaru's hand and stepped closer up to him, his eyes now revealing his desperation.

"If I can only meet you in my dreams then I don't want to wake up! The only way for us to be together is when I'm dreaming and it hurts knowing you'll never be beside me when I'm awake! Who cares about reality when I can be with you here instead. Even if you might not be real and this place isn't real, I still love you!"

"But you must live through the reality, you must find your way back. You cannot continue staying in this dreamland fantasy all for my sake. It saddens me to say this but there might be a day where I'll no longer show up in your dreams once you fall asleep. It will be easier for you and me if you let go before that time comes."
