Chapter 1
Broken Illusions
Windom, Minnesota
September 30th, 2002"Its so simple," muttered Astrid as she watched the rain fall from the gray clouds, the droplets falling onto her bedroom window slithering down to the bottom of the window before falling off. It was a cold and wet day. With dismissible interest, Astrid's eyes pulled away from the window, going back to what she had been previously doing a few moments beforehand.
A bunch of ballet pamphlets surrounded her, spread out all around the bed on top of a pale-yellow quilt. There was quite a few recognisable names on the bed, such as 'Swan Lake,' 'The Nutcracker,' and 'A Midsummer Night Dream' while there was a few not-so-famous ballets such as 'The Murder at Ashfield' and 'Sierra.'
The blonde-haired twelve-year-old gave a small hum as she picked up a pamphlet, reading the information over before placing the pamphlet back down and doing the same to another. Astrid's ballet instructor Mrs Eleanor had assigned all her students a task to pick which ballet they wished to perform this season.
It might have been one of Mrs Eleanor's whims to allow the students to pick the production still Astrid reviewed each ballet with feverishly scrutiny keeping in mind that while she might mentally be older and as such be able to participate the more mature ballets, most of her classmates were not at her leave of maturity.
Astrid picked up the Sleeping Beauty pamphlet, thinking of selecting this one and putting it forward to Mrs Eleanor; she might want to do Sleeping Beauty but ultimately the decision was left to how many votes a ballet production received.
"Everyone knows the story of Sleeping beauty," hummed Astrid as her eyes went over the pictures of the costumes with a pleased smile. There wasn't really any other option on her mind; she wanted to do a Sleeping Beauty production.
The story of Sleeping Beauty was simple. A beautiful princess with three fairy godmothers cursed to an eternal sleep by a scorned witch. The tale had the usual formula something bad happens to the princess, then the prince comes along to rescue the princess. "And look at Maleficent costume," she gushed, enchanted by the design more so than the other costumes in Sleeping Beauty.
With a satisfied nod, Astrid picked up the scattered pamphlets, gathering them into a bundle and placing them on her bedside table. Her eyes glanced over at the alarm clock, 4pm; her mother should be home soon. The blonde-haired girl stood up from the bed, heading towards the living room to watch some Tv. If she was lucky, there would be something that she liked on.

"I don't need it. I don't need it. I definitely don't need it..."
Astrid lay on the couch watching SpongeBob as she waited for her mother to return; she looked in the direction of the front door as she heard the sound of keys unlocking the door. Her hands moved towards the remote, pressing a button and switching the TV off as she went to go and greet her mother at the front door.
