Fate has its way of screwing with you at just the right time.
After the loss of her mother, Celestia is crowned Queen making an even number of princesses and an angry Luna. For what right does Celestia have over her? As to not invoke a jealous rage, they share a coronation and are both made queens.
Though now there is only one Alicorn princess, and no one to look after Canterlot an it's surroundings, as Celestia and Luna take on their mother's kingdom in the sky.
Then, after Twilight Sparkle creates her own magic to save her friends, it is finally clear that it is Twilight that must take on the duties of a princess.
She is given wings, and a stronger source of power, yet she has no control over these wings and has no clue how to use the immense power the royals have set upon her shoulders. So, with Luna by her side she is sent to a school in the Crystal Kingdom, which consists of only the most royal and famous students and teachers.
Finding herself an outcast she strays away from everything, skipping classes and hiding, trying to find any way out of the hellhole. But she is soon greeted with the fact she's not the only outcast looking for a friend in the place.
