(Es-sem-meena)

Centuries ago...

Emsemina Helton, a woman whose looks could bring kings to their knees.

With her enthralling brown eyes and an adorable button nose, complemented by full, luscious lips, she was a sight to behold.

Her gorgeous dark brown skin glowed like polished mahogany in the sunlight, shimmering beneath the moon's embrace, driving women to envy and intrigue over her flawless complexion.

But Emsemina wasn't just known for her enchanting beauty; she was a force of nature. Her curvaceous body had men practically begging for her hand in marriage, but she scoffed at their advances.

Noble blood or not, she turned down every suitor who dared approach her, preferring the thrill of her studies over the confines of marriage.

The women in her small town called her foolish; after all, was it not a woman's duty to become a housewife? But Mina had other plans—she aimed to follow in her father's footsteps, and if it meant breaking the shackles of gender inequality, so be it.

"Let them wait," she thought, resolute. "I will not give up until I'm six feet under. I will be a doctor, and I'll do it in the great town of Transylvania if I must!"

"Mina!" a nobleman called as I exited Baldwin's bookshop.

Oh, bloody hell.

"My Lord," I bowed mockingly before attempting to walk away.

Why must these incompetent men persist in begging for my hand? When will they grasp that I have zero intentions of marrying? Ever.

"I must ask if—"

"No, you can't, my lord," I interrupted, dismissing him with a wave of my hand, the weight of my books a reminder of my priorities.

"Do you not see? I have studies to attend to!" I lifted my hands, books piled high as if they were a shield against his advances.

Johnathan, the nobleman, pouted like a child denied a treat, his jaw clenched in frustration.

"You're still on about becoming a doctor? You should be honored that I—"

"Looks like this is my stop!" I shouted, reaching the small home where my parents lived, cutting him off before he could finish.

I dashed inside, shutting the door behind me with a thud. My mother was sweeping, her back turned, but I could sense her gaze on me as I entered.

"My Mina, how was your day?" she asked, and my father sat at the table, scribbling away with the focus of a man on a mission.

"It was good! I went to Baldwin's, and—" I paused, unsure of how to navigate the topic of my forbidden visits.

"Esmemina," Father's voice cut through my hesitation.
