The bell rings and I start to drag myself to my fifth period class. Which happened to be the one class I had that boy in. His name is Daniel Scott. We have had the same classes together for a while now and we hung out a lot and I really thought we had a spark of some sort but I guess I was wrong. As I walked into class and passed him, Amber who was sitting next to him whispered something in his ear and Daniel smiled and turned toward her to continue the conversation.
I rolled my eyes and continued to the back of the class where I sat. I got out the book we were reading and pretended to be super interested in it. I wasn't really though, it was an old book about some whale and I found it quite boring, I just wanted an excuse to not look at Daniel. After the dance word got around that he and Amber had started dating and it broke my heart. Best friends were supposed to support each other through everything, no matter what it was about. Instead of comforting me she stabbed me in the back. I blocked her number and don't talk to her anymore but I miss the friendship we used to have. The gossip, the laughter, the love. It was all gone and it seemed as though it was never coming back. Our teacher started talking about what we were doing today when the door opened and the principal and a girl I've never seen before walked in.
"Ms. Emily, this is your new student Clover Maxwell, she will be joining this class period for the rest of the year" he said, motioning for the girl to sit down.
Clover scanned the classroom for open seating and came skipping down my aisle like a kindergartener. I smiled at her childish antics, she seemed so carefree about everyone and everything in the world. Once she got to the back row she put her stuff down and sat down to my left. I was taken aback by her sureness of sitting next to me. For the past couple weeks the only people that have talked to me were my parents and a handful of teachers. Clover looked over at me and smiled.
"Hello! What's your name?"
I gave her an odd smile. I hadn't been called that before, it felt nice that someone acknowledged me.
"My name's Orianna but you can call me whatever you want, I don't really mind"
Clover thought for a moment then her eyes lit up as if she had the best idea ever.
"How about if I call you Ori. Like oreo but cuter!" She exclaimed with a smile
I gave a nervous laugh.
"Sure, sounds good to me."
I smiled at her and she seemed genuinely happy to talk to me. It felt nice. The teacher continued one with her lesson but I couldn't fully pay attention. I kept stealing glances at Clover. She seemed to like ELA. When she focuses her eyebrows go down and her lips press into one straight line. I giggled softly which made Clover come out of her little trance she was in. She looked up at me with a confused smile.
"What's so funny?" she whispered
"Nothing, you just seem super focused on this boring old book"
She let out a giggle "Well yeah I am. I just got into this class, remember? I have no idea what's going on in this story! Which reminds me, can we exchange numbers? Maybe we could hang out sometime and you could help me with this weird old book"
I felt my face light up and I nodded. She wanted MY number?!
At the end of class, we switched phones and entered our numbers into the other person's phone.
"See ya, Ori!" She said waving as she left
"Bye." I whispered
A new friend. I thought and smiled
