A friendly walk

10 days before

I jog down the street, and turn the corner to my friends house. It's not busy in this part of town, so all I hear is birds singing, leaves rustling, and my uneven breathing as my shoes tap rhythmically on the concrete. I'm used to nobody being on this road at this time of morning, so when a kid around my age passes by, I nearly run straight into him.
'Sorry' I say, almost out of breath.
'That's fine' he mutters into his phone screen, clearly taking no notice of me, but he's hard not to notice. Dark grey curly hair in an almost fringe like thing. Pale grey eyes, magnified behind what can only be explained as stereotypical nerd glasses. He has medium grey skin that matches his hair well. He's tall, so you have to look up to see these features. He's kind of cute really. I turn back around and keep jogging, Madison will not be happy that I'm late, even though we have another half hour to get there, and it's only a ten minute walk from her house. As I near her house, she walks down her drive, into my view. Her curly black hair bounces around everywhere, which makes it hard not to laugh. She pulls an angry face and yells something at me, but due to my heavy breathing ( I was only jogging a short distance, I'm so unfit), I couldn't hear her. She begins yelling again.
'WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?! IT'S FIVE PAST EIGHT ALREADY!' She yells, clearly convulsed at my lateness.
'Maddy, it's a ten minute walk to school, and we have twenty five minutes to get there. Calm down' I say, giving her the same speech I do every day. We begin to walk in the direction of school.
' I thought you weren't going to turn up, I would've left without you' she answered with a huff.
'For the last time, I'll text if I'm not coming' gosh, she didn't even like school, why the rush to get there everyday.
'Speaking of texts-' she begins, back to her regular bubbly self 'guess who texted me last night!' She half squealed. Here we go again with her girly talk. She let's boys get to her so easily, and has her heart cracked every time. I keep telling her to stop, but she just replies with something like 'I'll see it this time, I know it!' Or 'all the other girls are seeing it, Crys', and then she'll bat her eyes or toss her hair, and I'll give in. I need to stop that.
'Crys? Are you listening' she says, snapping me out of my daydream. 'Get back to the real world, stop daydreaming' she says. Bit hypocritical, if you ask me.
'Sorry, is it Luke? Or Ryan?' I say, trying to remember what boy she's overexcited about this week.
'Luke? He's old news Crystal! He dates Sara now, that skinny chick from biology class' she says, apparently shocked.
'How could I forget' I reply, my voice laced with sarcasm. She doesn't have a response, so I look over at her, making sure that she's still with me, and not upset. She's pulling out her phone to choose music. Wow, I'm not THAT boring. I hope. Her earphones are turned up really loud, so I can hear one of her bubblegum pop songs playing. Not being able to tolerate hearing it for the rest of our short walk, I pull out my own phone, and press shuffle. One of my favorite starts playing, so I hum along.

I'm a reckless mistake
I'm a cold nights intake
I'm a one night too long
In a come on too strong

All my life I've been living in the fast lane
Can't slow down, I'm a rolling freight train
One more time gotta start all over
Can't slow down, I'm a lone red rover

I'm a hold my cards close
I'm a wreck what I love most
I'm a first class let down
I'm a sit up sit down
.......

After a couple of songs, the school comes into view.
