IT'S JUST THAT I FELL IN LOVE WITH A WAR, NOBODY TOLD ME IT ENDED.
Inej Zenitz understands her place in the eyes of Marley's military, and knows better than to stray from it.
There is no grand legacy embedded in her roots, no divine ability in her blood that cemented her into a role of greatness. She bore no defying courage on the battlefield, rather she trembled at the sound of a gunshot. Her name would fade in the backdrop of humanity's existence, and Inej is fine with that. Solidifying a place in history doesn't concern her, not nearly as much as her need to survive.
She was ten when her home country found itself beneath crimson clouds and smoke, a Marleyan flag raised in its ashes. Those who survived were given a resolute choice: join them or be killed. But Inej is certainly no fighter, no matter how hard the hands of war tried to mold her as such. Instead, they had found use of her technical knowledge, and as years passed, she rose to be one of Marley's best warcraft engineers.
Four years later, Inej is given her first mission outside of Marley: accompany the survey fleet bound for Paradis Island, and record any technological advancements the Eldians there have made.
A rather straightforward ordeal. Only things begin to awry the second Marley's ship touches down upon the island's southern coastline, as they're ambushed by a handful of skillful Eldian soldiers and the long-lost Attack Titan in daunting form. And after being captured, Inej had been given a choice once more: join them or be killed.
Inej decides she must do what she needs to get back home, which she realizes are three things. 1) Pretend to ally with the Anti-Marleans as do as she's told to gain their trust. 2) Indulge in any opportunity she has to travel to off the island, Marley or not. 3) If necessary, get a bit of blood on her hands (although she really hopes it doesn't come to this).
