TW! Brief Mentions of Animal Abuse
You sighed, taking in the silence of the coffee shop. You were generally nervous around lots of people, but the café was so slow today you'd rather have it bustling with people.
Tiny bells tingled on the collars of some cats, while others strutted around with bowtie-collars.
Your favorite black cat rested beside you on the counter, laying on his back as he batted a ball back and forth.
You smiled, "Glad you are at least having fun, Inky."
At the mention of his name, he forgot the ball and padded over to you. His whiskers tickled your wrist as he brushed up against you. Inky had always been an affectionate cat, even more so with you.
Your eyes flitted to the large windows that allowed people to view the inside and outside of Whiskers and Whipped Cream. A pair of adults stood there, one with long blonde hair and another with neck-length brown hair. They seemed to be contemplating on whether to enter your humble café.
'Please come in. Please come in. Pleasecomein....' you thought desperately.
You instantly perked up as the brunet reached for the door, about to open it until the blonde said something and they both walked away.
You let out a frustrated groan, startling some of the cats around you. Inky flicked his tail slightly, seemingly as disappointed as you were.
"We can't be discouraged guys! Those two were probably dog people anyway. You all will find great homes, I know it!"
This was probably why people didn't come in. Here you are, in an empty café, talking to a bunch of cats like they were people. Then again, most of these cats were better than people. A fair share had come from abusive homes, with owners that didn't feed them properly and kept them caged up in tiny rooms all the time. In your book, cats were better than most people.
Then a holy sound reached your ears, the ringing of bells.
Your eyes snapped to the front door as you watched a familiar face enter. His tired-looking face wore a lazy grin, and his messy indigo hair made him look like he just woke up. Though that was probably far from true since your best friend never slept.
"Hey, Hitoshi-kun!" you greeted enthusiastically, relief flooding through you since you now had company.
"Hey (Y/n)-chan. Slow day today?" his eyebrows raised.
You hit your head on the table, "You are the first person to use those doors since Pops left to deliver the cats."
Right. When someone had officially adopted a cat your father would deliver them their new feline, complete an inspection to see if the home was cat-ready, give the owners some tips, and watch the cat settle before coming back to the café.
Hitoshi chuckled before slipping on his assigned beige apron and joining you behind the counter. The two of you had been co-workers for almost a year know, and friends for much longer. The cats loved your indigo-haired friend as well, almost as friendly with him as they were with you.
"How is school going? I can't wait for you to become a great hero once you graduate from UA." you tried small talking.
Hitoshi shrugged, you had been there when he was accepted into the General Course. He had ben disappointed about not being in the Hero Course, but to you who had been homeschooled your whole life, it seemed like an incredible feat.
You cracked your neck a bit before you walked out from the counter, "I'm gonna feed the cats now, change out the litter boxes, that kind of stuff. If someone comes in help them out. You know the drill."
