Emma and Rachel were at the cabin dusting it out, it was a two bedroom cabin. They were laughing about what could be living in the floor. As they swept out the dirt and dust, a spider came crawling out from a crack in the floor. Both girls screamed, and started to dance around.
Grace happened to be walking by when they started to scream. She opened the door wider and saw the two women dancing around. She walked in and saw the small spider. She stepped on it and ended it's life. Rachel and Emma stopped jumping around and looked at her, Grace grinned at them. " Pesky little spider, he had ya'll dancing around like chickens about to be dinner."
Rachel laughed" well in comes little sister to defend our honor from that creepy spider."
Emma giggled" yes, Grace you have saved us from that gigantic creepy spider."
Grace looked at them both, she started to giggle at their description of the spider. " All in a days work, would ya'll like some help?"
Emma threw a dusting cloth at her, then they all started to giggle. As they began work together, they completed their task more quickly and efficiently. They all sat around the newly scrubbed table and drank the lemonade that Rebecca had brought to them.
As they all sat around looking at the place, Grace spoke up, " you my friend need some curtains and a rug here and there."
Rachel nodded her head" it could use some cheering up in this drab, dark cabin."
Emma smiled" I thought about maybe going to town in a day or two. I am going to be needing several items for Carrie and I."
Rachel nodded" I know mom and I would love to accompany you to town."
Emma smiled" I wouldn't have it any other way, how about you Grace?"
Grace shook her head," oh no, the rocking of the wagon always make me sick. Better for me to stay here, besides I will be needed here."
They started to laugh, after a few minutes they started to walk towards the main house. Rebecca was playing with Carrie on the front lawn. The baby was giggling and gurgling at her new grandma. Rachel smiled at the two, that was her dream to have a baby soon.
Emma was actually happy for once, she hadn't had time to think on her past since she had come west. She was still a little upset at Peter, but he had made no advances towards her. So she couldn't really be mad at him for what had happened yesterday.
Peter had actually been avoiding her, it was like he was hiding something from her. She knew that what ever it was didn't involve her. Even though she had feelings for him, doesn't mean that he felt the same way. If he had any feelings at all he would have at least told her right?
They all sat on the lawn playing with Carrie, she was such a sweet baby. She had her dimples that were just like her mother's. No one could resist that baby, she was a joy to have around. What they didn't know is that they had a spy, someone who was watching the group of women in their moment of joy.

Peter was watching Emma from a far, he was enjoying seeing her laugh. He needed to keep his distance right now. When Mary was out here yesterday, Emma seemed to shrink into the background. Mary had every intention of making sure to make Emma think that they were seeing each other again.
Peter shook his head in disgust, he couldn't stand her anymore. In fact when she made sure to show herself with that kiss. It just angered him to no end, she had some guts to think that was going to work. He didn't want her, he wanted Emma and no one else.
She was his soul mate, even though her past was not the best. That didn't bother him, he knew that she couldn't help what had happened. That was her parents fault for being so stupid, and uncaring towards her. Emma did get one thing good out of all that trouble, Carrie.
That baby was the sweetest baby he had ever met. He wanted to be her dad, he couldn't stand the fact of another man taking that place. He wanted to be the father of more children with Emma. Maybe in the near future the house would be done. Then he could propose to her, and marry her. They would of course live in peace and happiness.
Emma would get her happily ever after, like all girls wanted. He just needed to be sure of her feelings, he made a fool of himself with one woman. He wasn't about to do that again with another one. Emma was different from Mary, but women were unpredictable. Never knew what would happen when it comes to the fairer sex.
Peter went back to mucking out the stalls, he needed to finish up his chores to go and work on the house. He just hoped that he wasn't building it for nothing, and that Mary didn't find out what he was doing. She would be out here bothering him every day, especially if she got wind of his feelings for Emma.
That is why he was keeping it a secret, only his parents knew of his feelings for Emma. All though his mother was worried that Mary would worm her way back into his heart. He has had to reassure her over and over that he had no feelings for Mary. She told him it just didn't sit well with her, that she knows what kind of girl she was.
Peter knew what type of person Mary was, she was a spoiled brat. She always got what she wanted, didn't care who she hurt in the process. Mary had made most of the girls in town fall at her feet. She didn't hesitate not one bit to steal a beau from right out under their noses.
Peter knew that he needed to play it cool till the time was right. He didn't want to cause Emma any unwanted problems. And where Mary was concerned she would have problems. This was going to be harder than he thought it was going to be. Women, they always have to be so much trouble. For the most loveliest creatures he had ever seen. Women were something else, he just needed to break their code of honor. He would be in then, but it was going to take lots of work.
