Chapter 3: Maia
It would be expect from someone who is taking Molecular Biology at age seventeen to actually pay attention. I guess I wouldn't meet anyone's expectations then because instead of listening to this boring lecture and taking notes, I am currently playing a pointless game of pinball on my laptop. My professor, who's name I have already forgotten, stands in front of forty students explaining the translation of mRNA in the most boring way possible. Why would someone voluntarily take this class?
Just as I'm about to beat level nine, I hear the professor call my name. My head snaps up from my laptop. "Yes sir?" I say politely. He stands next to a certain blonde.
"You've been excused from class. Please follow Miss Reed and I will see you tomorrow morning. Don't be late again." I nod and quickly gather my things into my book bag and stubble down the isle. I look at Blaire and she walks out the room in a quick pace. I begin to fast walk just to keep up with her. We exit the building and enter into the green courtyard that is almost vacant.
We pass dozens of enormous trees and bike racks hidden in between them. Blaire doesn't slow down her pace which surprises me since she is wearing six inch heels while I, on the other hand, am wearing a pair of flat boots and can barley catch up to her without breaking into a run.
"Where are we going?" I ask her. The real question I want to ask is 'Where is Colton?' but I know this is the wrong place and the wrong time. She purses her lips, probably wondering if she should even respond to me. She's always been the bitchy type.
"Your sound out begins in five minutes." She says in her emotionless voice.
"My what?"
"Sound. Out." She extends her words mockingly. "You will be asked questions while a telepath looks into your mind to make sure you are telling the entire truth. We can't have anyone who isn't one hundred percent loyal to GEN. If you're not the lying idiot that I think you are then this shouldn't be a problem. Should it?"It's strange how she and Colton are even related because they are so different. He's the type of guy who will hold a door open for ten people at a time while Blaire on the other hand, being the narcissistic bitch she is, would slam the door on your face. Twice.
"It's no problem at all." I tell her confidently even though I am terrified that I will mess up. If even the slightest piece of the truth comes out then I'm screwed. I walk through a glass door and into an air-conditioned room which is a relief because although it's only 9 AM, the temperature has already reached into the eighties. I don't think I'll ever get used to this California heat.
As I follow Blaire into a large room, I immediately begin to feel uncomfortable because of all the people staring at me. There are roughly ten people in here all dressed in business clothes making me feel entirely out of place considering I have on a floral tank top and blue skinny jeans. This is the first time I've seen Bradley since he came over to my home in Manhattan to convince my parents to let me attend Sherman. Surprisingly, he has a smile on his face when he sees me. He places a hand on my shoulder and greets me with a warm "hello."
"This is Maia Stone, the very promising student I have told you all about." Bradley introduces me the the other people in the room who I can guess are very important people in GEN Corp. He ushers me into a room with a one way mirror. The people on the outside can see me but I cannot see them. Perfect.
Right as Bradley closes the door on me, he whispers in my ear. "Don't screw up. Remember I have perfect aim." What would a day be without a lovely threat on my life from the one and only Bradley Parker. I can't even nod because she shuts the door. I turn around to face the tiny room with white walls and white lights. Even the floor is made up of sparkling white tile. The only things in this room are two cherry wood chairs which face each other. The first chair is empty but the second is occupied by Damian who is now dressed in his adult clothes.
