Chapter 15: Maia

"Where the hell were you yesterday? Jesus Christ, I thought you were dead." Damian's voice booms through the entire east wing before I can even see him. I turn around to face him and he grabs my wrist tightly, pulling me into his bedroom, completely ignoring my protests.

He slams the door behind us and finally releases me from his excessively tight grip. I hold my wrist in my other hand and look from the red markings then back at him. "If this bruises, I will be beyond pissed." I inform him as my eyes narrow in his direction. He ignores my words once again as he pushes his hair out of his face.

"Why didn't you answer any of my calls? We talked right before your debriefing then you just disappeared. Why the hell did you do that? Fuck. Are you okay? Tell me you're okay." I stare at him, completely baffled by his constant babbling and tsunami of questions.

"I have no idea what your talking about. Why wouldn't I be okay?"

"Because they found out. Didn't they? Ren told me Bradley decided to have you debriefed with a suppressant brace. Actually, disregard all my other questions. What I want to know is how the hell are you still alive? They already made Cormac disappear because during his debriefing some shady stuff was revealed. I thought they'd do the same to you." Damian finally stops talking and takes in a deep breath then waits impatiently for my response. It makes sense now. Why he is acting like this, I mean.

He doesn't know I was able to hide the truth from Colton. I didn't even know that until the very moment I was in that chair. I look at Damian's flustered face and take in the odd sight. He's never been one to care about anything but his own well-being but here he is looking complete psychotic by worrying about me. Perhaps it's for his benefit. He did call me his investment. Caring for my well-being is the same thing as caring for his own.

"Colton did make me wear the brace but he still doesn't know anything."

"How's that possible?" Damian looks at me skeptically as he pulls at his bottom lip.

"I don't know. I managed to focus enough to make him see what I wanted him to see. I made up a lie in my head. The brace must have been a defect, I suppose."

"No. GEN does not produce defected things. That brace should have suppressed every single ounce of your powers."

"Well it didn't. So what does that mean?" I look at him seriously, waiting for answers which he most likely does not have.

"I—" He starts out but then pauses to think. "I don't know. It could mean your abilities are unbalanced. Your more of a telepath then a telekinetic. I've noticed that since the day I met you but it didn't seem that serious but now that you're telling me that the brace didn't work on you, well...I don't know what else to think."

"Is that bad? Having unbalanced abilities?" The question comes out of me in a much quieter voice than I anticipated. I've never been scared of what I could do until now.

"Probably not but then again that's what they said about Enderson." He mumbles the last part and I'm barely able to catch the name he said.

"Andrew?"

"Yeah. He was tested on as a kid but GEN never manipulated his abilities. Everything I can do, that's artificial. With countless operations and tests, they were able to make me the way I am but Andrew? He's one hundred percent natural which is part of the reason why he was Bradley's prodigy. His favorite. Bradley would never admit it but I think deep down, very deep down, he cares about Andrew." I laugh in response. Bradley having a heart? Impossible. He is as cold as a man could get.
