Since I was young, I have always been interested in where we came from. Aren't we all?
Throughout school I did very well at Biology and History, Religious Studies too. Although I am not religious myself, in my mind it's not too dissimilar to Science - trying to explain the world around us. So I studied Biology, History and Sociology at college to satiate my hunger for more knowledge.
Shortly after finishing college, the Covid pandemic began. As many of us know too well, a large number of people were forced to isolate themselves. I decided to take a DNA test with the biggest genealogy company in the world - Ancestry. By the end of March 2020 I received my results - nothing out of the ordinary at first glance. My closest match was listed as '2nd cousin', but this was not a person I'd ever seen before, out of curiosity I gave her a message through the app, giving her my email and asking if she'd like to get in touch. Unfortunately I did not hear back through the app, or notice any emails for a while.
As his birthday was around the same time this was going on, I decided to buy my first cousin, Dad's brother's son, a DNA test for him to do - what do we have in common, who's got more of Grandma, who's got more of Grandpa? Etc. We were expected to get the results at the end of June.
I looked up my 2nd cousin DNA match on Facebook, luckily she had quite a unique name with only 3 on the whole of Facebook, and she had attached a picture on her Ancestry. She had an email link on her page, so I gave her a message on there, just in case she hadn't seen my other message on Ancestry - she emailed me back immediately!
