Kavan drew his thoughts back to the present as the funeral came to an end. He hadn't heard a word since "Amazing Grace" had echoed mournfully through the air, played on the bagpipes. He stood in stoic silence, watching the casket of his dearest friend being carried by pallbearers in military uniform. Only the shadows darkening his eyes betrayed his turbulent thoughts.
As the ceremony concluded, Gaetan's widow stumbled forward, her flaming auburn hair striking against the black, flag-draped casket. Life clashing with death. Clinging to the casket, Arlene wept uncontrollably, her sobs shattering the heavy silence. Soldiers stood at attention, their expressions solemn as they witnessed her heart-wrenching grief.
