You opened your eyes and an uneasy feeling immediately settled in your chest.
By the position of the sun, you had been here far longer than an hour. It looked more like four or five. The basket you had brought with you was flipped open; it's contents long gone, probably eaten by some sm woodland creature. On the bright side, you had managed to get some sleep, on the down side, there was a crick in your neck, your bladder was screaming to be emptied, and you were definitely going to get an earful from abuelita when you got back.
Getting up, you went to empty your bladder before leaving the grove. One of your children kicked you as you finished. You rubbed your bulging stomach and softly smiled.
"Your father may be back now, let's get going," at the thought of your husband being home, your stomach erupted with butterflies. Finally, he would be there to rub your sore shoulders and bring you tea. You would listen to him talk about his joys and troubles, and scare anyone away who wanted to give him trouble about his predictions.
You hummed a song as you made your way back to casita. At the very least, you had managed to get some sleep. You would have to ask Julieta what to do about your ankles though, carrying triplets had done a number on them. Well, on your whole body, really.
"Y/N!!!"
"Huh?" The voice seemed to be coming from the direction ahead of you.
"Y/N!!!"
"BRUNO!"
You ran in the direction of his voice, although your version of running now was more of a wobble.
After a few moments, casita came into view, as did your husband. He swiftly-moving figure made a large contrast to your lumbering form, but you can't say you're a great runner in the first place.
"Mi vida—" he didn't let you finish what you were going to say as he gathered you into his arms, holding you tightly.
Wrapping your arms around him, you sighed and leaned into his warm embrace. He smelled like the road, and sunlight, like warm spices, and coming home. For the first time since he left, you felt your stiff shoulders relax. You were all together now. Things were going to be alright.
Or so you thought. After a second, with Bruno's head nuzzled into your neck, you noticed he was trembling. Your neck felt unusually...wet.
"Hey, hey," you attempted to pull away to see his face, but his strong arms held you in place.
"Never do that to me again," you heard his shaky voice.
You were dumbstruck. What was going on? You hadn't done anything.
"Do what?" You managed to spit out.
Bruno stood still.
"You were gone." He pulled away, holding your arms in each hand. You gasped when you saw him. Dark rings circled under his eyes, as if he had barely slept since he left. He looked thinner, too. You would need to fix that immediately.
"I asked Julieta and mamá, they said you had been gone for hours," his voice was getting angrier, your Bruno never got angry, "you're pregnant y/n, you can't just go somewhere without telling people where you are going! What if you fell? What if you went into delivery early and we lost the little ones, or you? Did you even think about how that would have destroyed me?!"
You gaped at him. Honestly, you hadn't even thought about it that way. The birth was still at least a month away, and you were tired and lovesick, you needed to be away from the house for a little, that's all. No harm done. Right? Right?
The tears that had been threatening to spill all day had returned to your eyes, you didn't even register what Bruno was continuing to rant about. You felt stupid, and hot, and now that your husband was here, all you did was made him worry instead of welcoming him home.
"Don't even get me started on what mamá said, she said that you were barely sleeping and not eating enough! Are you —"
With a cry, the floodgates broke lose. Tears streamed down your face in fat drops, spilling onto your shirt. Bruno looked at you, dumbstruck.
"I haven't been able to sleep since you left, you idiot! I went to the grove to get some peace!" You gurgled through your tears, "I was left alone, I don't know how to handle one baby, let alone three! It keeps me up at night! I've NEVER been a good sleeper, you know that!"
You ripped away from his touch, wrapping your arms around yourself for comfort. Shock was etched across Bruno's face, his arms still outstretched, fingers twitching slightly.
You took a deep breath in a vain attempt to stop your tears. With one last hard look at your husband, you pushed past him into casita. Your family had gathered around to listen to the commotion, but they parted to let you through.
Storming up the stairs, you slammed the door shut, determined not to see anyone until you were good and ready.
A few seconds later, you realized your outburst had cost you a kiss and embrace from Bruno. Curling up on the bed, you stared out the window and willed sleep to come and put an end to your tears.
