Considering all the trouble the triplets were causing their mother before they were even born, it was poetic irony that they were born on the most beautiful, cloudless day of spring.
You woke up with a start, the first time you had woken up absurdly early since Bruno had come home. Speaking of, your husband slept on undisturbed by your movement, his limbs entangled in yours like an octopus. You smiled despite yourself, reaching over and gently running your fingers through his bountiful curls. They were even more unruly than usual from sleep.
"Hmmm," Bruno hummed contently, his large green eyes opening and meeting yours. "What are you looking at?"
"You. You're very pretty," you smiled and tousled his hair.
Bruno rolled his eyes and gently tackled you back down onto the pillows, peppering your neck with kisses.
"Everyone knows you're the beautiful one, mi amor," he grinned devilishly down at you.
"Pretty boy," you grinned back.
"Why you—"
Before Bruno could do anything else though, another wave of pain rolled through you. That one was definitely worse than the one that woke you up. You groaned and curled in on yourself, cradling your massive bump in your hands. 1...2...3...you breathed deeply in and out, remaining calm like Julieta and Pepa had taught you.
Your husband, on the other hand, was not so composed.
"Y/N! Are you alright? Is it the babies are they coming?" He jumped to hold you, but you pushed him back.
"I'm sorry," you gasped, "yes, they're coming. Could you...go get someone? Please?"
Bruno's eyes became wider before he narrowed them in determination. Despite the pain you were experiencing, you couldn't help but smile at how cute he got when he believed he was being helpful.
Pulling on a pair of trousers and tucking his night shirt in, he nodded to you once before running out the room.
A bead of cold sweat ran down your neck. Okay. Labor pains. It was your due date, everything was fine. Everything was normal. You knew you should feel relieved that you would get to meet your children soon...and be rid of the weight that currently made you feel like a planet. But instead...
You were terrified.
You jumped up at the sound of the door slamming open and a flurry of family members tumbled into your room like a bunch of headless chickens.
"How are you feeling, Y/n?" Julieta asked, placing a bunch of towels on the bench at the end of your bed.
"Fine," you squeaked out, trying to maneuver yourself while Pepa stripped the covers off around you.
Luisa brought in a steaming basin of water, Camilo behind her looking like he'd rather be anywhere else, placing a bowl of something on your dresser before flying out of the room. Isabella opened your curtains and windows, letting the warm spring air in. Mirabel seemed to be busy in the doorway, explaining to a curious Antonio that he couldn't go in your room until the babies were here.
"Remain calm, breathe, like we told you, you'll have your babies soon!" Around Pepa's head, a small sun shower had begun, betraying her excitement.
"Pepa, you're going to get y/n wet!"
Bruno appeared by your side and you sighed with relief.
"Bruno, I—"
"Get out, Bruno! No men allowed!" Pepa snapped, interrupting you.
"Come, Bruno," Abuelita put her arm around her son and tugged him towards the door.
Panic set in your chest. Where was he going? You needed him here!
"Bruno- AAAHHGHH," you let out a strangled grunt as more pain ripped through you. You lost sight of your husband as the women of your family flew around you.
Minutes became hours. It was around noon by the time Abuela told you to start pushing.
You grunted, sweat dribbling down your back as Abuelita stood on one side of you, holding your arm as you gripped the covers. Julieta was between your legs, Pepa running a cool cloth over your face to wipe away sweat and tears. You were exhausted and terrified. You knew men were not usually in the birthing room, but damn it! This was his baby too! You knew he would come if you called.
"It's still just the top of the head," Julieta moaned miserably, "y/n, keep going!"
"BRUNO!" you yelled before falling back into the covers of the bed.
Later, you would find out that Bruno had been outside this entire time, surrounded by the boys who tried to coax him into eating something. However, he refused, pacing up and down the hallway. The moment he heard you call him, he burst through the door.
Agustín turned green at the sight of the room, Felix averted his eyes and covered his younger son's. Camilo fainted.
Bruno, though, he took his mother's place at your side, kissing your lips.
"You are doing wonderfully, mi vida," he smiled down at you, tears in his eyes.
"Bruno," you gripped his arm. The rest of the world fell away so it was only the two of you, and this enormous task ahead of you. "I am afraid."
Bruno took your head in both his hands, leaning his head so your foreheads touched.
"I know, my love, so am I. But I know that together, we can face anything. I am with you."
Nodding, you turned back to Julieta. She quickly wiped away her tears, pretending she had not overheard yours and Bruno's conversation.
"Ready?" Said your husband, holding your hand.
"Ready." You replied.
A couple hours later, you held both your sons in your arms. You kissed their fuzz-covered heads. They had had their fill of milk already, and dozed off.
You sat in a clean, warm bed. After you had given birth, your mother and sisters-in-law had quickly cleaned up and left the room, leaving your new family to bask in your glory for a few moments before being introduced to the world.
You looked over at Bruno who sat in the rocking chair next to your bed. In his arms lay your daughter, the second born and most fussy of your children. Yet Bruno held her like he held the secret of life itself in his arms.
Bruno kissed her furrowed brow.
"They are all so beautiful," he looked up at you, "thank you."
You blushed at his words, then looked down again at your sons.
"We'll name one of them after your father," you said, looking at your firstborn boy, "Pedro."
"My mother would love that," Bruno grinned, his attention once again on your daughter, "Sebastian, for the youngest."
You looked at the newly-born Sebastian, who already had his father's nose and the curl of your lip. He was unbearably beautiful.
"And our girl? Maybe Alma? Like your mother?"
"No, she needs her own name," Bruno pulled the swaddling blankets closer around her.
"Abigail," the name popped into your head, "it means 'father's joy'."
Bruno sat up and you scooted over to make room for him, careful not to disturb the newborns sleeping in your arms.
"Abigail is perfect," he replied.
Bruno leaned over, laying a kiss on your lips.
A knock on the door interrupted you both.
"You lovebirds done? We want to meet the new Madrigals!" Pepa's voice boomed.
You and your husband laughed and he put an arm around you. Parenthood would be difficult, you knew, but as long as you were together, you could overcome anything.
"Come in!" You called out, and your whole family came in, ready to welcome the newborns into the family.
