During an interview, Robert Kirkman claimed Norman Reedus (Daryl) originally auditioned for the part of Merle Dixon. He was rejected, but his audition so intrigued the show-runners that they created the part of Daryl just for him.

In an interview on National Public Radio, Steven Yeun (Glenn) said that his parents (who emigrated from Korea as adults) watch the show faithfully but do not always understand the nuances of the English used in it, so they get a bootlegged version with Korean subtitles. Yuen also said that his father once asked him to thank Melissa McBride for saving his life. Even with Yeun remarking his father that it was all staged, he insisted his son to thank her, which he then did.

Actors who played walkers had to go through walker school to learn how to walk and move like walkers.

During the filming of season 5, Norman Reedus requested to keep Andrew Lincoln's beard clippings "for some strange purpose known only to Norman Reedus."

The description that Daryl gives of Merle's drug dealer (who most likely sold him blue sky meth considering he had it in his bag earlier in the series) sounds an awful lot like Jesse Pinkman from Breaking bad. While the word 'zombie' is not used in the show, it is featured multiple times in the comic books and the video game series.

Andrew Lincoln, David Morrissey and Lennie James are all British. Lauren Cohan moved to London when she was 14.

In an online interview, it was revealed that Frank Darabont envisioned having several self-contained episodes that would not continue the main story. One such episode would have been the season two premiere. It would have involved Sam Witwer (who Darabont used in The Mist (2007) and played the tank zombie in the series premiere) as a solider in a Black Hawk Down (2001) styled Atlanta. Witwer's character would have encountered several of the cast before being bit and locking himself in the tank.
