What I've Forgotten

I woke up in a park. Light from the sun was blinding my vision. My head was throbbing and my muscles were stiff. Was I drunk? Possibly.

Wait, what did I do last night? Oh, sweet Jesus, where the hell am I? God, what was my freaking name? Oh, no. This was not good. I started freaking out, making my head pound more. Sharp pangs vibrated through my stomach, and spread to my arms and legs. I shrieked.

I smelled something metallic and I looked around, finding the smell strangely delicious. Then I found the source. A lady with her young boy were standing a few feet away from me. I wonder how they haven't noticed me yet.

Then I realized I was partially buried under a thin pile of leaves. I scrambled up and brushed my self off. Then I froze.

Something red was staining my white crop top and my flower printed short skirt. I felt like fainting. Blood. Possibly mine.

The lady looked at me and stared, her mouth agape. She started to come towards me. "Are you okay?" She asked me. Her face was a mask of concern. She stopped about a foot away from me. "Should I call an ambulance?"

The metallic scent of her flooded my nostrils. The pangs in my stomach grew stronger but I held back my yelp. She let out a small squeak and I jumped on top of her, the pangs in my stomach started to get unbearable. The lady kicked me, but I hardly felt it. I breathed in deeply. Then I saw her veins, I could see the blood pumping through them. I craved that blood. I lowered my head and pressed my lips against her neck. The lady still struggled against me, but I was stronger.

I could hear the little boy screaming and crying. He was probably six. I could hear people gathering, but then I bit down on her neck and broke through her vein and blood exploded into my mouth and ran down my throat.

Blood isn't that thick, I decided. It tasted metallic, but I still craved more. I felt people trying to pull me off of the poor lady. I kept drinking from her, my pulse beating rapidly. She screamed, but it was barely heard.

Finally, I felt myself being pulled from the lady with so much force, I flew back several feet. I pressed my fingers against my lips. I pulled them away. They were stained with her blood. I licked them clean and I stared at the person who threw me.

I almost gasped. He had perfect skin, the most pale skin I think I've ever seen. Not that I remember how anybody I met looks like. His eyes were what startled me. They were scarlet red with snake pupils instead of human pupils. His dark brown hair covered his left eye and grew past his ears. He stared back at me. Then I snapped out of it.

"You threw me," I said to him, my voice full of both furry and wonder. How did he manage to throw me so far?

"Yes, I suppose I did," he responded. His lips curled up into a smirk. I lunged at him. He easily caught me and said, "You know the entire Washington D.C. Police will be after you if they get a look at your face, I suppose we better hurry up." Hurry up? He pulled me to my feet. "The name is Kai. May I ask your name?"

I couldn't remember my name. Somehow, I no longer cared that I couldn't remember anything. I just made up my name. "Tessa," I said.

Kai led me through an ally and pulled me across streets and down sidewalks until we arrived at a boarded up subway station. We hadn't said a word the whole five minutes it took to get here. Now that we were here, I bombarded him with questions.

"Why are we here? What is this place? What have I done? Why are your eyes so.... Red...? What am I? What are you? Why can't I remember a goddamn things before today? Why-"

"Shut up," Kai told me and basically pushed me down the stairs towards the boarded up entrance. "We're here because this is the entrance to one of the vampire covens. And you fed on that lady back there, you needed blood. My eyes are red because that was one of the flaws the witches gave us. We are vampires. You can't remember anything because that's another flaw the witches gave us. So we wouldn't remember what it was like to be human, so we don't pity them when we have to kill them. Have I answered all of your questions?" Kai asked me.

I was confused before, but now I was even more confused and had even more questions. Great. Thanks. "Wait, did I kill that lady?"

Kai thought for a minute then said, "Yes, yes you did." I wasn't surprised, nor was I all that upset. I didn't know why I felt nothing for this woman, but I didn't care.

I looked back down at my outfit which was covered practically head to toe in sticky, dark blood. The metallic scent almost overwhelmed me, and I know Kai felt the same way, he was staring at my shirt like he was thinking about just ripping it off and eating it. Oh, yay.

"Come on," Kai told me, tearing his hungry gaze away from my shirt and leading me to the boards and opening a wooden door that was almost completely blending in with the rest of the boards. The tunnel was very dark. I dreaded going in there.
