"Balloons are deflated... I guess they look lifeless like me"
***
"Okay Liyah, we can do this" Aaliyah said to herself before taking a deep breath to mentally prepare herself before going into her grandmothers house for the annual Easter egg hunt.
Today was the first time in two years that she had been back to Chicago so she was a little nervous to see her family again. College had really been taking it's toll on her plus she had just never felt comfortable around most of her family so she found it easier to stay away. Had it not been for her grandma getting cancer she would not have been here today.
She adjusted her outfit after sliding out of her all black Camaro so that she could walk into the house and get this over as quickly as possible. Aaliyah had been guilt tripped by her mom into staying for the summer but she wanted to spend as much of that time in the hotel as possible.
Looking the the home she shook her head and walked up the porch steps, the green paint on the door was faded and you could easily the small indents from bullets that struck the home over the years. Honestly her grandma lived in an awful area but she said that hell would freeze over before she left the house that she single handedly paid off 20 years ago.
Music spilled from the house the second she opened the door and a group of kids ran past her on their way back outside "Is that my baby" her mother Skylar asked from the couch before getting up to cross the living room and give her a hug.
"Hi mom it's good to see you too" Aaliyah said while hugging her mother back. Liyah and her mom had been really close most of her childhood but when her father was shot and killed it only made them closer.
"You want me to make you a plate" Skylar asked while already pulling her daughter to the kitchen. Liyah couldn't help but to laugh because she knew that her mother would give her food even if she objected.
"Is that aunties baby" her aunt Tasha yelled and threw a spoon into a pot before running over to hug her tightly "Girl you got a little boyfriend or something over there cause I see you getting all thick" she said causing Aaliyah's face to warm up.
"Nope this is all the work of Chic-fil-a right here" she said with a laugh before sitting on a barstool. The most she could do was make Kool-aid so she knew no one would be asking her to help with the food anytime soon.
Tasha went back to making the collard greens "Good cause I wanted Don'Tae to introduce you to one of his big headed friends, I think yall would get along nicely" she said while pouring some hot sauce in the pot.
"Now you know my daughter aint messing with none of those dope boys that Tae be hanging out with" Skylar complained. Her husband and Liyah's dad had been killed to gang violence so she wanted her daughter to avoid that heartbreak entirely by only dating nice guys that she met in college.
